Oddly specific TF2 sound problem

Post by Greyed » Fri Feb 12, 2010 7:13 am

For the past month or so I have been on of those people who, when they key up their mic, causes all other sound to cut out and craptastic sounds to play instead. You know those people. This started right around the time I switched from XP to W7 and had to give my up perfectly good SB! X-Gamer since no W7 drivers exist.

Anyway I figured it might be my headphones being this side of ancient so I bought a new pair of headphones from Razer. Nope, same thing. Fine, bought a PCIE SB! X-Fi, same problem.

Thing is this only happens in TF2. TS2, Vent, Global Agenda in-game, BF2142 all work fine. Only TF2 has the problem.

Then 2 nights ago I was on a server with a former coworker of mine and he said "You're clipping really bad." ... clipping, gain is too high. Check my TF2 audio settings and sure enough, mic boost is on, output volume is maxed. So I lower the output volume and ask him if it helped. "Nope, still clipping really bad." I go back to the audio settings and they are maxed again! Try as I might I cannot lower them at all. Any ideas on how to get the damnedable settings to take? It isn't all settings. I can modify my multiplayer settings, video settings, etc. Only my audio settings are frozen at max.

I had the same thing, updated drivers fixed mine. (hope they are available).

Completely uninstall old drivers and utilities for the soundcard before updating.

If it's just TF2 and nothing else, I'd recommend verifying the integrity your game files or defragmenting the cache files. If that doesn't work, maybe a full reinstall of TF2.

Some drivers have settings specific to certain games. If new drivers don't help, find some older ones to try. I can't seem to find info on Source's sound system, so it is may be native to the engine and not middleware; this means that problems might be contained to just its sound system as other games often use Miles, FMOD or others.

I had that same problem.
Good to know that other people do, so I don't have to make a topic. XD

Yeah, it's just TF2. I'm just boggled that the audio settings will not alter. Every other game VOIP works fine, TS2, TS3, Mumble, Vent, all of 'em work and I can adjust their settings. TF2, adjust the settings, leave that screen, go back, they are maxed again.

try to set the volume in TF2 rather then your at <put SB app name here> volume control application.

I have seen L4D2 modifying my system volume settings and mic boost. Maybe TF2 behaves the same way.

That's the problem, I am using TF2's settings and it is TF2's settings that keep resetting themselves to max.

If Source games modify global settings, it may be that another program that modifies global settings can change TF2's sound settings. Do you have any apps running in the background that change global sound settings? Maybe a SoundBlaster app like MMX was saying? TF2 might be changing the setting properly just to have another program change it back.

Are you using the drivers from Windows Update or the ones from Creative? I found this page that looks like it has the most current official driver.

From Creative. And I don't think it is modifying my Windows settings since those aren't maxed out.
