Computer Beeps

Post by Hamese » Thu Mar 15, 2007 8:16 am

Alright, one of my machines is not turning on, so I have been trying to trouble shoot it. I get no video at all, but what I do get is one beep at a time. The beep is a short one sec beep that repeats a few seconds later. There memory is currently in, but this happens with it out and everything else unpluged (I.E. HD and CD).

thoughts?

I've always been poor at identifying beeps. Try the manufacturer's website (of your motherboard), sometimes they have a beep glossary/index to identify beeps and codes.

I think it may be a power issue. I pluged in another PS (an older w/ less wattage), but then I got no beeps or anything. When I hooked up the original one it came on just fine. I then installed the memory again, and it is still running. I wonder if the connection to the board came loose somehow.

So far it is working and that is all I really care about.
Yep, don't sound good. Unplug all your components off the motherboard,
if you have more than 1 stick of memory, pull off all but one, making sure
it's in the single stick position. . With the power supply turned on, short out
the power up pins and see if the cpu fan comes on and stays on. if not,
swap out the one stick of memory for another, try it again.
If still not, swap out the power supply. If still not, either cpu or motherboard bad,
or defective bios.

If at any of these times the cpu fan stays on, power off, plug in one item at a time,
starting with the monitor. If monitor works, look for error listing when the system
posts (single beep, good. Sometimes two beep will still post showing the error)
Next, plug in the hard drive and see if it will boot.

Myself, this would be an excellent time (excuse) to upgrade the MB, CPU, etc..

:)
A second beep usually always indicates a hardware prob.

After swapping the power supply and getting no response, I went back to the old PS and connected little by little. It all came back, so I bet something came unseated, but it has been up and running ever since.
