mod_perl

Hi all. I have a tech related question.

I am interested in learning some web front and back end stuff, and I believe that I want to start to learn perl, mod_perl 1, to be exact.

This requires Apache 1.3. I want to find out what you all think. What is the easiest Linux distro for me to use to play around with these tools. I can find guides and such online pretty easily, but it has been a few years since I did much Linux-wise and probably four or five years since I set up any kind of web server.

I messed with FreeBSD and Red Hat a bit in the past, but I know a lot of people like SUSELinux and some of the others.

I am more of a command line type guy (I'm old, remember?), but don't mind visual stuff if it makes things much easier.

What are your suggestions?

Perl is nice and easy, but to be honest, PHP is more useful. Perl is the granddad of PHP! These forums and many other web based .scripts use PHP. Also, PHP integrates with servers more easily than Perl. Perl requiresa certain amount of tweaking to get just right.

If you want a nice and easy, well supported Linux distro, get Ubuntu -

Their forums have all the answers!
Command line is still the fastest way of doing stuff, despite all of Ubuntu's GUI means.

I have several servers running an Ubuntu LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) setup and they are faultless and easy to maintain and run.

Thanks, Dog.

I have an old book here on LAMP, actually.

For you, no time has passed. For me, a trip up into the garage attic, where it is like 40 degrees F hotter. A journey through numerous boxes turned up the book in question:

So, now I know that the stuff I worked on a few years ago is still viable, which is very good.

Any other resources you would recommend to someone who is a beginner, but has a basic grasps of how to program?

Thanks!
