One week to Vancouver 2010...

Post by Dog » Fri Feb 05, 2010 12:21 am

...and still no snow on Cypress

Whistler (where most stuff is happening) is awesome...they've had tons of snow.
It's 2hrs north of vancouver so there's no probs.

But poor old Cypress (on the outskirts of Vancouver) where the freestyle skiing and snowboarding is happening, is trucking in snow from a ski resort 3 hrs inland 24/7 ...jeez!

The El Nino is making everywhere nice and warm!

So who's coming up to stay?

I think everyone I know has been up to whistler but me, being so close.

I wish I were coming up there for something, just too expensive. I would drive up there for a day to see the luge (I mean come on, it combines blades, ice, high speeds, and spandex), but I've heard tickets are impossible to come by other than via scalping. Oh well.

If you book hotel and buy your tickets three years in advance, it's a lot cheaper than last minute. I have a few friends going, to bad noone would take me.

I've been looking forward to the Olympics being in Vancouver since the day they announced it. I've grown up wanting to go to the Olympics, and having them just 3 hours away was going to be utter perfection.

Then the a-hole company that got the US contract to sell tickets booked them all up in $5,000 - $10,000 packages, and refused to sell any outside of them (bear in mind, they're around $10k for just four days, not even a week) until the last minute, and they're still charging like $1,000 per ticket for important stuff. It's a bit of a scandal down here right now. Dirty stinking profiteering bastards, I hope they choke and die.

I guess someone said that the 400cm base that Cypress typically gets, would be good! :D

But in an El Nino year....

Besides, I thought the games were supposed to be Whistler based. I understand why they kicked out the Canucks on their epic 42 day road trip just so as they could grab the Garage for the Hockey and opening ceremonies. But snowboarding and freestyle all should have kept in Whistler.

And they should have built an extra road from Chilliwack, north through Harrison along the lake for a couple of 100km and down through Pemberton to Whistler. Would have eased the pressure on the Sea to Sky highway and meant that people didn't have to pay for $25 round trips on a bus.

I'm heading DOWN for a men's quarter final hockey game!!! Should be fun, lots of partying will be going on. Staying with friends for free, so no hotel worries.

Well Mr. Dog, if my performance appraisal goes badly next week I may have some (well, lots really) time on my hands and I would be glad to come for a visit. Do you have a couch for me to sleep on?

Be forewarned that if the appraisal goes very badly I may not need to return to Alberta and you will have a hard time getting rid of me......

This whole Olympics thing kinda took me by surprise. I heard "2010 winter" and thought they meant next year, as in the winter of 2010. Oh well. Hopefully it'll not cause all the disruption they seem to expect it will.

(I'm surprised they're trucking in snow to Cypress and not just manufacturing it on-site. I guess the artificial snow has a different texture or something.)
