Reminds me of a similar thing from a few years ago. Some friends and I wanted to put a band together to jam on some old punk songs. We put an ad up for a singer, and this young guy came in. He asked us what we wanted to play, and we said, "Clash, Pistols, Ramones, Stooges, Misfits, Dead Kennedys...."

He sneered at us, said "oh, I thought you guys wanted to play PUNK", and walked out.

Yes, offically Blondie did start Rap. An I also like the people like TYO mentioned that do not know the difference between Punk and post-grunge. I like both Punk and Old Skool (Which I divide up into "Golden Age" of the 80's and 90's Old Skool)

The thing with a lot of people now a days is that music becomes "older" much quicker. They listen to a song way too many times and then get bored with it. Then the next hit single comes out and is played all over the radio and what not. And the cycle continues.

I'm convinced that a lot of newer music will never reach classic status.

*sigh* I had a whole debate that lasted almost 3 hours a few nights ago with a few friends about music. I wont get into details, mainly because i dont want that headache to come back. So ya this thread is already making me cringe on where it might be headed.

Oh and im not much of a rap fan by any standard and even i wouldnt consider the examples they were asking for to be old school. *expletive* ppl man lol

OH and George 2 things, whats up with No Dice? and I looked at your website and you really need some more avenged sevenfold! lol

...was thinking that surely they would get a mention by someone.

I hate rap "music" nowadays. Most of it just promotes criminality and ignorance. There isn't anything clever or talented about it. Just a bunch of morons babbling about dumb stuff.

He probably thinks "punk" is Blink 182.

Am I crazy, or are people just stupid musically now?

I think it's the latter

I personally dont listen to rap much, but If you request old skool and want eminem? you must be barking up the wrong tree. I think you were right in assuming they wanted that kind of stuff, its what I would've thought of[/quote]Of course they should know better than to ask a DJ for old school rap and expect that sort noise. But relatively speaking, Eminem would be old school to an 18-20 year old. "Forgot about Dre" was probably the first rap song they really liked and since has long been forgotten by radio stations.

To answer your original question, I think most people have always been musically stupid. Most people will like music just because it's popular. Even if it truly is a good song, your average joe pop will only appreciate its popularity.

Run DMC Albums:

Run DMC
King of Rock
Raising Hell

As soon as Tougher Than Leather came out, it was all over for me.

Beastie Boys: License To Ill is borderline.

Whodini, Grandmaster Flash and Mellie Mel, and yeah, a little DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince (Have fun listening to Nightmare on My Street).

I liked P.E.'s Fear of a Black Planet, but once Ice-T and others took the violence to too great a level, and NWA and others took the sexual innuendo to too high a level, that stuff was all over for me.

I don't like music that is demeaning and swears a lot, so a lot of 'rap' music is right out for me.

For me, Run DMC was revolutionary. I love their first three albums. I remember being really bummed out when I heard that JMJ had died, and that was in 2002...

I think "old school" probably means whatever they first listened to in mainstream rap, which is probably around their middle school years.

So, for 18-20 year old Eminem is probably about what they listened to back in middle school (what they would consider "old school").

Me being 25, I think the "old school" category might have included Dre/Snoop/Biggie/2Pac/Jay-Z and a couple others. Though, back then I was still aware of some of the stuff before it.
