I never shut up when I'm in game. I'm always warning of incoming enemies, alerting that sentries are down, telling everyone to follow me in when I'm ubered, what's on the point, "SPY!!!" etc.

I also make it a personal hobby to annoy people who are not being good players. Last night in fact we had an unsavory person on our team who said that "you guys f---in' suck!", to which I replied, "Nice teamwork, guys". Another one of my favorite standby lines for people like that is "Maybe it was your positive attitude" :D
Yeah, I've seen you doing that one :P I am adopting it myself.

I like when they start saying that and then you win.
Someone said their team sucked in chat the other night and then it was funny because they started winning... Someone (I think it was a regular Villun), kept saying 'But... your team sucks, right?' after they won every round for a few. It was funny.

I know. I will never understand the people who come to play a game and do nothing but complain about it. I've heard it all, no grenades, TFC is better, our team sucks, we don't have enough of this class or we have too many of that class, so and so must be aimbotting, talking on the mic too much, you let me die, why didn't you uber me, and don't even get me started on the crap Medics have to take.

For me, when I play TF2, I get into a GOOD mood because I'm enjoying myself doing something I like to do. But these people...why do THEY play?

Carpe, I think they play to make our lives miserable. I also like the ones that endlessly complain about the Ville servers..... "This server sucks, these players on these servers suck." Which I usually tell them that there are atleast another 1,400 TF2 servers out there, they are welcome to find another to play on instead of complaining about it. But that just leads to more complaining from them. :( The best thing that I can do like you stated earlier is to keep things positive and try to get everyone to work together.

I find it the funniest when a player asks to change the map.... especially when he is on a 24/7 map...it only takes a click of your mouse, unless you have a cat or something, to go to a server that has the map you wish to play. :D

I think the other thing to remember about communication is that it's a two-way street. Not only does the person with something to communicate have to say it, the people who need the info need to listen and react accordingly!

Many times I've watched as I called a spy's identity, location, and target, and hollered warnings to a person for 5 seconds or more from far away, and watched as they totally ignored me and got backstabbed by a spy they could easily have killed, or at least, avoided. Other times somebody will be calling for assistance with a push at the CP, or will be reporting the escape route of a person carrying intel, and nobody will come help out. People will run right past, in the wrong direction, completely oblivious to what is happening, and cost their team the game by not listening.

At the very least, acknowledge that you heard an important communiqué, so the person giving the info doesn't feel they're being ignored and then clam up. A simple "copy, spy-sniper" or what have you goes a long way towards good communication. This is for the double reason that it encourages people to keep talking (they feel they're being acknowledged by the team), and that it provides a repeat of the important message for those who might have missed it the first time. Obviously you don't need the whole team copying every message, but if at least somebody does so, it helps.

Follow-up is also very important. If you've just called out that there is an uber-pyro pushing the point, and your team is running from all corners to help you, don't forget to follow up with a "pyro down" or a "medic down" as applicable, to let people who haven't yet arrived know the situation is cleared up. If a spy has been sapping the crap outta stuff, or has been called out without being killed, be sure to mention it when the spy is finally dealt with! If you can't find the spy, and have to give up the search, say that as well! "Spy still alive, can't find him" at least lets others know to watch their backs. When I play a spy, nothing is a juicier target than a team that doesn't talk to each other about such things.

A final thing to consider, which some others have already covered but is worth repeating, is to watch the way in which you say something. This is a game, and we're on pub servers. It doesn't matter if you have the most points, have a clan tag, or are a 1337 d00d somewhere - you are not my boss. Do not give me orders. Many others feel the same way. Suggestions get results, orders get the middle finger. "Hey, we could really use an SG on the roof over here, it'll force them to use their ubers early. I'll help you protect it!" will get a lot better results than "You, build a sentry on the roof! Yeah, you. What the hell are you doing, you idiot? Build it on the roof!" Similarly "We could use another medic. Is anybody willing to switch? I would, but I'm not very good at it..." will get better results than "Somebody go medic!" which usually will just get people to tell you to switch yourself, since you're the one who wants it. Again, suggestions good, orders bad.

I'm one of those folks with a computer in the busiest room of the house, dissuading me from using a microphone. I can, however, use voice commands and pixel language; they get ignored a lot too.

It's certainly a lot harder to pick up on character voices when they aren't at all distinct, but not everyone uses them just to satiate their dispenser fetish. My favorite emotes are:

Incoming! = Hey, there are some nasty glowing people coming towards us. We should probably run.
Spy! = You're about to get backstabbed... please turn around?
Go, Go, Go! = I'm about to Uber you; go kill things!

I also tend to do seemingly random things to attract teammates' attention. The best example is I adore running in the peripheral of a sniper's scope while shooting rockets at them; that often means you are about two seconds away from getting backstabbed. While far inferior to an actual microphone, shooting rockets at a teammate does seem to imply there is an enemy directly behind them.

And of course, silent understanding. A lot of people who are familiar with the game know what a certain class should do in a certain situation. If I stand near you as a spy when both of us know there is a sentry around the corner, chances are I am about to go on a sap spree and wait for you to take out the gun. If I yell for medic at full health as a heavy near a corner, chances are I'm about to jump in a sentry's line of fire to take out their defense. Of course, if I die, it's certainly not your fault for my lack of communication - but the silent pleading was (vaguely) there.

It takes a lot more effort to communicate without a microphone, but some small hints are still there. I'm certainly not advocating silence in games - a real voice can be far more useful in almost all instances - but it's an alternative for those of us who don't like speaking out. So if you happen to see me! I do try to work with people, even if I don't speak up, and most of the time I'll do what you'd expect the class to do... probably.

I agree about the silent "body" language that often gets missed. I think, that if you play medic, you tend to be a bit more aware of that dynamics. When alltalk is on, I will use some gestures to indicate which direction I'd like to go. It's a lot more effective with the pyro, I think. Swinging your flamer in the direction you want to head is kinda like the hand signals of army guys, IMO. It's also satisfying when you can interpret what the other wants without words. "Become one with the pyro!"

The only communication I hear is. Spy is (whatever). Sentry turret at blah blah somebody sap it. Or I charged of uber. Or Sniper blah blah. Then the people that complain. They join the the ville server and are stupid. Example. *Joins Server* "Man tf2 sucks TFC is way better" 'why are you playing tf2 then?' "Theres no more servers for tfc, man tf2 sucks, *sigh*" 'Well theres still servers to play on tfc' "Yea i guess but tf2 still sucks all my friends say so" 'why don't you go play with your friends then?' "All my friends are playing tf2" '....'

I agree with nick, sometimes you can say a lot with just the voice commands or even just by getting a feel for the class roles. Playing as medic, you really have to rely on teamwork and understanding what the healee is doing, and if you don't have a mike, this is kind of hard...

So, the quick guide to "Having Prime as a medic"

1. If i have uber and am spamming the "Go Go Go" button, i am going to uber you whether you like it or not, so start running.

2. Spamming the "INCOMIIIIIING" button while you are ubered and dancing around in circles means there is a pyro/heavy/soldier standing right next to me with a big grin on his face, waiting for the charge to end. Please kill him. Please?

3. "Move up!" means MOVE UP, THEY HAVE NO ONE ON POINT, COME ON PEOPLE PUSH! WE ALMOST HAVE THIS! followed by spamming the "jeers" command when everyone sits back and waits for them to get their sentries back up...

4. Spy! Spy! Spy!.....*backstab*.....okay, that one's not so specific, but if i'm chasing a random demo swinging my bonesaw wildly, chances are you should help me out before he takes out half the team.

I really wish there was a response to the "meeeeediiiic" command, like an "I'm coming!" button, cause it gets annoying real fast with people spamming the medic button.

Silent body language can play against you though. If I see your body language as a sniper, I can judge your next position and line-up the shot. Sometimes you have to feint a few moves or give mixed signals, which, without a mic, can confuse both me and your healee. I still maintain your best bet is still a mic. Body language has a nasty tendency of giving your next step away to the enemy.

There are a couple players, Optimus foremost among them. who convey an amazing level of detail and manage to say a lot very quickly with the (voice) commands on the keyboard.

My hat is off to these intrepid few, because I can barely get things out verbally sometimes.

Last night my team go the treat of me going "aaaaaaaaaaargh" into the mike as I was about to say something and was horribly surprised and killed. I felt like the Dad on that South Park WoW episode :P
