I'm fairly curious how large the radius is on the banner.
Anywhere on the map? Melee range? Aside from the extremes, 1-3 medic leashes maybe?

On the other hand, there is no reason you can't rocket your own face to use the equalizer. The shovel is gong to be the only one of the 6 you replace permanently w/o question.
He's a decent shot. He's got some skill, but he's in too much of a hurry.
He's throwing away bullets like they were candy. He doesn't know how to take his time.
Aim careful, and look the devil in the eye.

I assume the pickaxe has to be either slower at all times or starts out with lesser hitting strength. No sidegrade weapon in the game comes without a tradeoff of some kind.

The tradeoff is that you're bleeding.

I assume that the pick is inversely useful to your health. If you're trying to melee at full or overhealed health, you'll be doing tiny damage, but if you're in there while hurt and already on your way to death, you can bring a couple people down with you :)

That said, I'm not sure if I like the idea of a weapon that doesn't do a normal range of damage. I pull shovel whenever someone gets close, regardless of HP, I don't want to do so and hit for 15 damage a hit.

well yeah... it says that in the de.scription...

This melee-slot pickaxe becomes more deadly the more damage you take, letting you move faster and hit harder the more wounds you endure. Get close enough to death, and you will become Death himself.

it says the more damage you take the more you deal. it doesn't mention what it starts at, or how low it could go.

If Valve wanted more medics to consider equipping the bonesaw again they should do something similar to the pick axe.

I imagine it would start somewhere about how the axestinguisher is.

well a lot of people still use the regular axe... no one uses the bone saw, I don't see a point.

I'm talking about the damage that it starts at.

I'll certainly be using it, the only time I melee is when I'm out of rockets and shotgun shells loaded and my opponent is in front of me and I need to land the killing blow, this weapon is perfect for that situation.

That and it'll help me get to mid faster after rocket jumping.

I often use the bonesaw because it works at normal melee interval between strikes. It messes me up to have one that doesn't go when I think it should.
