The convenience of having the game available on a server you can access from any computer with an internet connection? The fact that you won't have to drag a PS1/2/whatever with you along with controllers, cables, and a television to play it if you have a laptop? The nostalgia factor of being able to replay the game without digging out and hooking up the old console and game?

I never got into FF8, but those are the same reasons I bought FF7 on Steam (though my PS2 actually is hooked up due to a recent Kingdom Hearts bender, the real reason is that I no longer have the game; brother took it with him when he left home).

If FF7 is anything to go by, this release of FF8 is probably the older PC port that's just been optimized for newer computers.

I want to play 9 again, but I don't expect a Steam release; 9 never had a PC port in the first place and SE is too lazy (not to mention they hate 9) to bring it back.

I prefer VIII to VII any day of the week. I will pick it up eventually.

Buyer beware: skimming the FF8 discussion boards, the game uses the low quality MIDI format music from the original PC port over the superior PS1 sounds. There's downloads and instructions to replace that music under the guides for the game though.

FF7 had this same issue when it was released. Enough people complained that SE actually patched in the old music several months later, so make your voice heard if you disapprove of the MIDI music.

Also, again like FF7, you're required to have a Square-Enix account for product activation, but once activated you don't need to worry about it again, unless you plan on using cloud saves. You really don't need to use cloud saving if you have a flash drive though.
