As far as I know, the battery in RSE only affects time-related events; berries, certain evolutions, daily handouts, and the lottery. I played a copy of Emerald some time ago on a flash cart that didn't have the battery to begin with, the time was permanently frozen at 11AM. Those two berries I found at the beginning I replanted and found them still as lumps of dirt a month later. It's not a complete loss without the battery, but it does take away some of the functionality of the game I suppose.
That same flash cart I found a shiny Wingull, I never got it out of there before I wiped it for something else.
