What I think they should do is simply make the embarked units have the same 1-10 health bar that they have on land, and have them take damage according to the unit and what is attacking it. A trireme might not be able to take down a fleet of embarked longswordmen or musketmen, but a Frigate or Ship of the Line might. It stresses a powerful, not just numerous, navy.

They can balance this fairly with the Songhai by giving them the ability to *attack* naval units with embarked units with, say, 50% efficiency as they have on land (which can be brought to 100% by giving the Amphibious promotion). This allows the Songhai to have the strategic naval advantage they are meant to have while balancing the rest of the game.

That sounds like a reasonable proposal, Carpe.

(PS - I'd love to hear your take on our game yesterday, as well. Where we share opinion, where we differ, and particularly things I wrote about that you might have a whole different take on!)

Good notes Alize. I can see where that would be frustrating for both of you. Is there not an option for turn based vs. simultaneous?

Well, I don't have a whole lot to add that you didn't cover, I'll give a second synopsis of the game from my perspective.

I was Persia and Alizee was Japan. I had some early trouble with Barbarians but had a couple archers and a warrior out clearing them as they appeared, and they didn't cause me too much grief. Alizee, on the other hand, had much more trouble keeping them in line. I made two tactical errors, though. First I spent too much gold buying land for resources, leaving me not enough to negotiate effectively with City-States, and I did not build a true coastal city until well into the game, so I had only one port to build Triremes out of. When I finally did get my first one out into the water, I noticed his army amassed on the shore, and immediately shifted my cities to build their own units. I had a reasonable army and a technological leg-up on Alizee (Great Library helped that out) and an almost full Tradition Branch of policies (Thanks to an early Stonehenge). When he began moving his units across the channel, I preemptively declared war, and began using my Triremes and land-based ranged units to assault the coming forces. I sank about two or three of the embarked units and archered a couple more as they landed. At this point he allied himself with one of the City-States north of me. He'd focused more on his military than I, so he quickly overwhelmed my military, albeit leaving his injured. I took heavy damage to my capital and indeed thought the battle was lost, but I managed to fend them off with my Triremes bombarding the units from the sea and the city's defenses, though narrowly. As he brought his second wave over I had managed to build some more units, most importantly a Catapult which I fortified within my capital and used to heavily damage anyone who came near. After his second assault failed, I allied with another City-State on my island, and turned my military to the City-State north of me he had allied with, and conquered it fairly easily. He told me later that losing that ally proved devastating to his home front. It was also on the coast, allowing me another city to build Triremes. He proceeded to build Citadels on his coast to ward me off, and I lined my coast with units and attempted to hide my navy so it could strike (it worked a couple times). Not a lot happened after I conquered the City-State, but I continued building a modest army and navy to the fairly uncontested south, while still maintaining the usual front I'd been showing. After researching Astrology I gained the ability to have my embarked units cross ocean, which is what restricted us to fighting in the narrow area of water previously. I drove my force blindly into the southern portion of his island hoping for an unexpected assault on his flank, but he'd called my strategy and I found units there which quickly decimated my forces on sea and land. At about this time, we'd long since agreed this game would be an intractable stalemate, and would likely remain so until possibly Flight. Neither of us wanted to grind on that long, and decided to call it quits when Giz offered us to play Worms.
