Great question; the second one says 'dual core' in the title, but 'quad core' in the specifications... ?

Ah, ok, ignore this folks. I bought the E3110. Apparently these are pretty much identical cores.

SPENDING NEARLY $300 SHOULD NEVER BE SO EASY!

I'm not sure if there really is a difference, but Xeons are used in servers and Core 2 Duos are used in desktops.

you should check with your motherboard manufacturer to see if it supports that cpu. a lot of desktop mobos dont support server chips that ive seen.

The funny thing that I do think many have missed the Xeon E3110 and 3 quad core Xeon X3000 series CPUs is that they are socket 775, not the socket 771 that they usually were. This means they work on consumer products as well. Ive seem a Xeon e3110 and E8400 side by side, they are exactly the same chip. If you ask me, the E3110 is saw looked cleaner.

HOLY CRAP!

It's here already! When they say "express shipping" they don't mess around.

But I really didn't expect to have to install it so soon! @_@

It even came with a free magazine... Maximum PC DIY PC building/upgrading/tweaking...

But I have Villuns... O_o

That's a bit dangerous. It's kinda like me telling people I know alot about computers. Then, knowing the some of the geeky locals, they'll throw questions at me that I can't answer because I don't know. And then they'd probably laugh. They're kinda mean. <=/

And as an aside, Clay, those are some of the best Muppet Bloopers I've ever seen.

Anyways, is there anything I have to worry about editing in BIOS (or anywhere at all for that matter) during the install? I'd much rather not have any unfriendly surprises that I wouldn't know how to deal with, and leave me with an unbootable computer.

What motherboard do you have?

You may have to update your BIOS to run that 45nm chip.

I've installed it and am currently running Buster now, so it's not exploding on me or anything... but the BIOS did say an update is needed "to unleash full power!" Quaint.

Anyways, mine's an ASUS PK5 Premium Black Pearl Edition with WiFi.

I think I tried a BIOS update before, but I guess it didn't work. Hmm. Odd.

i have a similar board (p5k3) for my new system. you should flash the bios to the newest available, tho since its working ok, i wouldnt worry to much about it. with asus, the bios updates are usually added cpu support for the newer releases (they never list xeon compatibility tho) and occasionally memory fix/support.

i did some checking and you shouldnt have any problem running the xeon on the p5k.

the newest bios is 504. if you do want to update to it, use the dos based utility. the windows based update program has been corrupting some of them from what i see posted on asus support forum.
