As Flash said above, it's all in the math. Horizontal distances in the nether are 1/8 of distances in the overworld, while vertical distances remain the same. If you have an overworld portal at 1600, 800, height 70, the ideal nether portal location will be 200, 100, height 70. If there are no other portals anywhere near you in either world, the horizontal coordinates are the only ones that really matter, but if there is a lot of stuff around (or you expect there will be in the future), you really do want to get as close to an exact match as possible. When I build my overworld portal, I often try to make sure I'm building at coordinates evenly divisible by 8, just to make life as simple as possible.
