I guess now is a good time to make backups of the current versions in case M$ screws it up in the future.

I can't really blame him for that. Phil Fish really got the short end of the stick and I'd hate for the same thing to happen to Notch. With any luck, the game will continue to be developed in the way that it is... and maybe Microsoft will do better things with it than we're all expecting. It's really an uncertain time, but there's still a chance.

So those of us with "Alpha" accounts were promised free updates, expansions, and addons forever. Something that was not so for "Beta" and later accounts. What are the chances that Microsoft would honor this?

I'm trying to find exactly where it says that, so far all I've found is Notch's blog in December 2010.

It seems that way. All I've seen is people saying it's terrible without any explanation as to why.
And I feel like any explanation I would get is just paranoia or something "bad" Microsoft did years ago.

It would be funny to see the reaction of people if EA bought Minecraft.

Hopefully Mircosoft doesn’t waste the potential and talent in Mojang. I hear it can happen but it’s pretty Rare.

Lots of gamers want everything for free and view any sufficiently-large organization with the gall to request payment in exchange for something that a person or group of people have given thousands of hours of their lives to create must be the epitome of greed and evil. It's really ironic and hypocritical, given that these people are complaining about perceived greed when they themselves are being objectively greedy by demanding that others provide them with free entertainment simply because they demand it.

As far as I can tell, Microsoft has done nothing except ask for payment in exchange for services. The only thing out of the ordinary is that they continue to charge for online services when other companies do not. Otherwise, it's just blind, ignorant bandwagoning on the part of the customers.

Let's not forget that Microsoft is made up of living, breathing, feeling human beings, guys. And also remember that nothing bad has happened yet, and it is possible that nothing bad will happen. Remember when everyone got up in arms over the Facebook Oculus acquisition? Remember all the horrible things that actually happened from that? Me neither.
