The Sky Sanctuary course is correct in it's music, in fact most people agree that the first minute of the theme was ripped straight from Generations. If not the music, the assets definitely (same goes for the Ocean View assets, i'd bet my left arm those came straight from Seaside Hill). And from what I understand, Starlight Parade's theme is a remix of Starlight Carnival Act 2 from Colors.

From the games I've played, the music does compare, though a lot of it is far more intense than their original themes (in particular I love the arrangements for Rogue's Landing (Skies of Arcadia) and Adder's Lair (Golden Axe)). There are a number of games I haven't played though, never played Burning Rangers or Panzer Dragoon for example.

Ahh ok, maybe the music I'm familiar with have evolved quite a bit over the years of sequels that I just don't recognize them anymore. Also to note, I've had one bug now, after finishing a race the game got stuck on the black screen instead of going back to title, mouse and music still worked.

It literally sent chills down my spine when the Sonic 3 title theme came up as the flyover music for Sanctuary Falls. Truly awesome moment.

Also, Galactic Parade is my favorite part of the game so far. Starlight Carnival was my favorite world in Sonic Colors, and this track does a brilliant job of capturing the feel of it. Plus the remixed music is superb, even if it is near-identical to the original SC Act 2 theme (just some enhanced percussion and the lead synth changed a bit). The track flyover theme also does great justice to the area's map BGM from Colors, although again it is near-identical, with some added percussion and the removal of the lead.

One thing I really like about both of those tracks is that both of them contain elements that are near-identical to pieces of the levels in their respective games (Generations and Colors) instead of just sharing a visual theme. For example, the giant neon centaur-archer at the end of the lap in Galactic Parade was a major background element in at least one level in Colors - I'm not sure if I'm misremembering, but there might even be one level where it becomes a piece of the level itself that you have to traverse...

... Now I really want to go play Colors again. :P

I haven't had a chance to play this yet but I must know. Is this game comparable in quality to Mario Kart? How does the online fare, is it fairly smooth? The whole sonic nostalgia and whatever doesn't appeal to me that much so I'm thinking along the lines of item balance, power sliding mechanics, control, tracks, that kind of thing.

All I want is a good Mario Kart kind of game for Steam... seems to be too much to ask for sometimes.

This one isn't nearly as Mario Kart-ish as the first S&SASR, so it's tough to compare them. Overall though, I think this one is much better - the AI is a legitimate challenge and doesn't seem to rubber-band or always have the right items (at least, not conspicuously...). The items are a little more bland, but they seem to be MUCH better balanced.

I tried online with Biker last night and had no problems. Seems to be about as smooth as the singleplayer. Your mic is on at all times though (likely because it's kind of hard to hit a press-to-talk key with a gamepad in hand, and this game was designed for a gamepad, although it is keyboard-compatible), so be aware of that.

Items seem pretty balanced, although you'll need to aim pretty carefully with some of them to land hits as there are only a handful of homing items, and even they can be evaded pretty effectively if you/the CPUs play it right. Still, hitting enemies with the straight-shot items ends up being easier than it looks as they fly very fast. The more-powerful items aren't as common to receive for players or CPUs, and they aren't that much higher-grade than the items that pop up most often.

Power-sliding is a bit different from other games that I've played - building up your max power-slide boost takes much longer than in other games (15-20 seconds), but you can quickly switch between drift directions without losing your boost charge, so you can charge it up over much longer stretches of track.

Controls feel good IMO, but if you're not used to Xbox-style racing control layouts, it might take some getting used to. Right trigger to accelerate, left trigger to drift, A to use items, left stick to steer, right stick for mid-air stunts - that's about all you need to know. Standard 360 racing layout pretty much.

The courses are pretty awesome, but part of that is probably recognizing the games they're themed after. Some of them are obnoxiously narrow or hazardous at times (Race of AGES, this game's Rainbow Road analog, is very difficult to avoid falling off of - luckily falling off only sets you back about 1-2 seconds, unlike Mario Kart), but for the most part they're well balanced between ease of navigation and challenge. Many of them will change dramatically between laps - for example, the Panzer Dragoon track takes place entirely in a car for the first lap, then mostly in a boat for the second lap, then mostly in a plane for the third lap - which makes for far more interesting races.

TL;DR - Better than Mario Kart in pretty much all ways, but also vastly different in more ways than one might expect (more ways than I expected, certainly).

If you want something more Mario Kart-esque, I highly recommend the first Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, which bears far more resemblance to the MK games. It's about halfway between those and this.

I wouldn't say they don't cheat, certainly not Mario Kart levels of cheating; Shadow seems to be ridiculously rubbery in Hard or Expert GP races.

Also here's an interesting find and an amazing finish either way. Unlike most games of this type, if you're playing single player, a straight-up tie does not guarantee a win for the player:

Aside from that, Myself, and two of the bots literally finished within one one-hundredth of a second of each other. This was on Samba Studios. The game was so blown away by this that it crashed as soon as I went on to the next race.

Yes, be aware, the game seems to have random crashing issues. Most of my crashes have been Carrier Zone (the stage for After Burner; the stage that has you do a Luigi Circuit-esque back-and-forth flying between aircraft carriers) so that level may have something to do with the crash issues.

My first impressions of this game is that it reminds me of Diddy Kong Racing more than anything else.

According to a dev post on the Steam discussion boards, there's a region lock issue concerning online multiplayer. I can't seem to join the games either. The Sumo devs are aware of the issue and they've stated that they plan to push a patch for it as soon as they can. I hope they're quick about it.

Here's the post, it also mentions the "Bonus Edition" content will be released in the near future, which features Metal Sonic for a driver and a course based on OutRun.

Shifty's Steam recommendation pretty much sums up what I would have to say about this game:
ShiftyDevil wrote:It's actually pretty decent.

It's no double dash, but not bad.
I may have to play it more but something still feels like it is missing from the game but I can't quite pinpoint it. The best way I can describe it is that I'm not feeling as great of a rush when I play this game. Mario Kart Double Dash and DS had it, even Zero Gear and Blur had it to a lesser extent.

To Sonic's credit this game is definitely better than recent Mario Karts.

Someone should make an F2P kart racing game.

There used to be one by the name of KartRider. But it got canceled. At least, the English version did.

I've been playing the Korean version. It's probably the best kart racing game I've ever played.

Today I discovered that Spy will occasionally leap onto the nose of his jet and spy-crab for a few seconds. I now love this game even more.

The AI rubber bands super hard on Expert. You pretty much need a perfect race and some luck to win them.

I catch myself yelling BS a lot. Be in first, 3rd lap. Flawless so far. Then bam, you get hit by a random projectile. Before you can get going again you get hit by 6 more, a sitting duck, and then you're in 7th place.
