Social Media Revolution

Post by Masakari » Wed Nov 18, 2009 4:12 pm

A coworker was doing a presentation on the effects of social media on society, and showed me a couple of interesting videos about the current state of social media and just how powerful it is in today's world. A couple of the videos have overlapping facts and information, but it's so amazing to think just how much the world has changed

It certainly is an amazing time to be alive, and yet, 100 years from now, people will be shaking their heads and laughing at how we got by with so little :lol:

Recently, I've found myself spending less time with technology of the last 10 years. Cutting yourself off, or reducing how much you use of something, will make you appreciate it THAT MUCH MORE.

Personally, I think everyone should do such :)

You could call these videos eye opening, but to me, it almost seems obvious. It all makes sense really. a super computer more powerful than a human brain by 2013? Sure! I'm surprised its not built now tbh. a $1000 consumer computer in 2049 more powerful than all of human existence.? with inflation and the likes, its like buying the cheapest computer you can find. And I certainly knew about the power of the internet 5 years ago. And guess what, it is still growing, exponentially. And it will be for easily the next 5-10 years.

I am driven by two main philosophies: know more today about the world than I knew yesterday and lessen the suffering of others. You'd be surprised how far that gets you.

My first email address was from a now-defunct service called Xoom. When I lived at home, my dad was part of early internet with Prodigy. Anyone else remember that?

Hell yeah, Xoom also had web hosting, right? I stayed away from Prodigy and AOL back then and went with a local startup ISP.

Prodigy? Yeah, that was hot stuff :-P I played my first online RPG in around 1990 or 1991 using Prodigy, sitting at my dad's side. The pre-WWW days when it was amazing just to connect to another computer were pretty awesome. I still had an old computer with a 2.4 modem in it until 2005, and I can easily remember connection options down to 0.3 speed showing up.

Raise your hand if you knew your connection speed by listening to the noises made by your modem!

::raises hand::

I know there are others :-)
