So I found a stronghold but it seems to have melded with a mine shaft and several underground chasms. I found a library, but I can't seem to find the portal room, any ideas?

There should be one there, each stronghold gets one as far as I know. Also, there should be 2 libraries. (Just my 2 bits worth, things may be different now due to the 1.9 update).

And yes, strongholds are often broken apart by cave systems, chasms, dungeons and all sorts of other nice things. I have never seen one thats intact with no inclusions.

Portal rooms (and other parts of the stronghold) can be overwritten by ravines, caves, abandoned mineshafts, dungeons, or parts of the stronghold itself, forcing a player to find one of the other strongholds

In just just about every stronghold I found, I was convinced at one point or another that there was no portal room, but I ended up finding it eventually. The most recent one that I found had a portal room that was actually inaccessible without breaking down a wall.

I agree it's possible to have a stronghold with no portal room, but I have yet to encounter one.

alrighty, mine is like a freaking maze so I need to get some supplies and take another stab at it, maybe draw out a map or something...

Just start opening up the walls, that'll make it much easier to navigate!

Use the creepers as mobile TNT, they love to help!

Just put a quarry around the stronghold - that will reveal the portal.
