Feed The Beast has returned!

Greetings all!

The hosting provider updated the versions of FTB's Direwolf20 pack that it uses, and it seems there is a problem with the new version which caused the server to freak out and cease function (it was stuck in a perpetual cycle of restarting itself, attempting to install the update, crashing because something wasn't right, and repeating). I am working with tech support to get things sorted out and bring the server back up, but suffice to say, the old world will be gone, and the mod pack will be a new one (possibly very similar, possibly a different one).

Long story short, the server will be back in action at the end of this week!

The question: shall we continue with FTB DW20 in its new version (assuming they get it working), do we want to roll over to FTB Infinity Evolved, which is the new pack they seem to want to push (it has all the same main mods as the last one, EXCEPT THERE ARE NO POWER SUITS), or do we want to explore another path? We have lots of options! Whatever the answer is, look for a fresh new server to come and Minecraft on this coming weekend, right after Christmas! Burn off those holiday calories by swinging your pick!

FTB Infinity Evolved is my vote. I've played it quite a bit and like it.

I also like "Unstable", the cutting edge FTB edition that uses MC 1.8. Alas, it tends to live up to it's name and so probably is not appropriate.

Frankly, I'd prefer something without powersuits; they kind of render a lot of items from other modpacks a bit obsolete. So yes infinity evolved gets my vote.

If the unstable pack is reasonably stable, something based on 1.8 would be cool too.

I probably won't be able to play it until next monday in any case (or maybe fairly late Sunday).

I'd be fine with a new mod pack. I like the power suits, but can live without them. I know we disabled the flying ring this go around, if this mod pack has that, it would be cool to have it enabled as a flying alternative.

Oh, how ironic; an innocent inquiry on my part on how to connect to the new server was the flap of the butterfly's wings that sent this hurricane of destruction in motion. I guess the upshot is that when it's working again, I'll be starting with everybody on a brand new map, which is nice... even if I do have to wait a little longer than I wanted. :)

The only 1.8 pack that appears to even be a standard option from the FTB interface is the FTB Unstable 1.8, which is unfortunate. "No tech support will be offered for this pack" is not a particularly heartening statement, especially without knowing what the update/release rate is. Additionally, my huge draws (AE2's ME system plus the big 'ol nuke systems from Big Reactors to power enormous quarries from Buildcraft) are all missing. So, I'm onboard with the FTB Infinity Evolved if it's stable and supported -- given it does have all the packs I really, really like. :)

Oh... and I'd be down for turning some mods off, if that's an option we get. I could live without powersuits, they are a bit silly -- albeit I'll miss my integrated, inventory-space-saving tools (especially the wrench).

That's four folks ok with Infinity Evolved there, with no particular dissent as yet! Other opinions still welcome - let me know! I'm travelling currently and have limited internet access, but I'll start taking a deeper look at the mod packs of Inf. Ev. to make sure there are no red flags, and will post my thoughts. Assuming we do use it, I'll probably nuke the hat mod if it is in (it actually looks like the straw that broke the camel's back on the previous server), and if Thaumcraft is in, I'll turn off the giant unkillable world-corrupting glitch golems, but I'll try to leave it pretty much as is when I can. If the flight ring exists, I'll leave it in :-D

In other news, tech support has got the server back under control and we should be able to get things rolling with Infinity Evolved this coming Saturday as planned. In the meantime, an empty world (back to DW20 1.6.1) is up on the server if anybody feels like hopping in to refresh their memories on how things function in Feed The Beast. We'll wipe it and move to the new world this weekend, so do whatever you want, so long as it doesn't crash the server again!
