How About Some PvP?

Post by Marf » Fri Apr 20, 2012 10:07 pm

I hear the server has been slow lately, I myself haven't been on for a bit. Here's an idea that might make it a bit more exciting...

Enable PvP.

There should be an area on the map that's free-for-all. Clearly marked with signs every 10 blocks or so around the perimeter warning that you are entering a PvP zone. Anyone inside the zone, as well as any structures built within are fair game. The zone would be far enough away so it doesn't interfere with anyone's house.

Outside the zone people have to first agree to a duel before killing each other. No random killing outside the zone.

I've been watching the Mindcrack Ultra Hardcore series on Youtube, and PvP looks fun.

No.
Would be hard to police and would annoy people who don't want the PvP.

However, a different server might suffice.
There is a possible PvP MC event planned for the Ville Olympics coming later this year.

I definitely don't want PvP. It opens up too much potential for griefing/accidental tragedy.

If we want some kind of player competition, why not build a spleef arena? It can easily be non-lethal if we don't put anything dangerous under the field. I could design and build a self-repairing stone-floored one, as I've done it before and I kind of want to do it again. Put some Efficiency pickaxes in there for the contestants to use (not using lava under the field means they can be re-used), and the stone will be easy to smash through.

Absolutely not. It is server wide or not at all, and under no condition should we allow it.

I think there should be a event, but i think otherwise there would be accidents and the such, sadness would follow.

I agree PvP should be kept on a different server than TV5.

Will, I don't see any reason why you couldn't build a spleef arena. How much space does it take up?

i think it depends on how big you want it, ive seen 1 floor ones, then ive seen 16 floor auto generators

I was thinking of a single-floor self-repairing arena. Probably need to allow at least 15 blocks of vertical space to build it in, to ensure it doesn't run out of space, although it likely won't use all of that up. Any or all of it can be underground.

My design needs at least 24 blocks in the horizontal for an arena floor that's 12 blocks wide, up to 36 blocks for a 24-block-wide floor. We'll need to settle on a size to know exactly how much; the floor can be anywhere from 12 to 24 in either direction, and doesn't have to be square. We'll want some extra space outside of that range for embellishments such as spectator stands, hallways to get around, storage for tools used in the arena, etc.

I'll get screenshots of one I've built in singleplayer a little later.

I'm a little fascinated. How do you make it self-repairing?

It works using multiple stone generators: a lava flow falls into a water flow, creating a stone block; a piston pushes it out of the way, letting another one form; the key difference between this and a basic stone generator is that this one then has a whole mess of pistons which push the stone into the arena area.

Stone isn't necessarily the best material for spleef, but it is infinitely renewable with an automated system. Keep some Efficiency picks in the arena and it'll be fairly easy to tear up.

Here are a few pictures of the one I built in SP:

Didn't Soup make one of those self-rebuilding arenas on TV10 before it was closed down?

This is hard to be cool and suave while being informative at the same time. Goddamn my coolness.
In my experience, common sense isn't too common.

yeah he did, but it used cobble instead of stone and had a score counter.

That's pretty cool. I wish I could do a thing with redstone, but it confounds me :D

Would they be falling through the floor into anything? Putting water under the floor would be a good way of adding some punishment for losing while not having it result in death. Also, rather than just building an arena and have it be there you could make the outside look nice and decorate it in some spectacular and amazing looking way. Just some thoughts.

I was gonna post something but the fact that when I brought this up to a really good old friend he never got back to me on the issue. It has made me too sad to comment properly.
