Thunderstorms

Post by TTHREAZ » Sat Apr 30, 2011 2:14 pm

So I was on TV5 a little while ago and witnessed my first thunderstorm. It was pretty cool to watch the lightning strike and hear the thunder. However, I got a little nervous since my building is made of wool. So, I did a little research.

From the wiki:

Lightning is a lethal element to the storm. It strikes randomly across the map, creating brief fires. While most are put out almost immediately by the rain, it will once in awhile ignite wood and other flammable blocks successfully.

While the chances of a flammable building (e.g. Mr. T's Blasting Service) catching fire are slim, the possibility is still there. I went ahead and placed a layer of glass on top of my building to help prevent fires by lightning. I urge everyone else who has a flammable roof to do the same.

Be safe out there.

That is quite unpleasant news. I'll have to make a glass ceiling on the Capitol as well, to be sure.

I've heard rumors that Creepers hit by lightning go thermonuclear.

If lightning strikes a creeper, it becomes supercharged and has a much more powerful explosion.

A defense that thought up for lightning is make a Pitched Roof out of stone stairs. It not only protects from lightning it also looks fairly nice.

I hate the things...

Always making me dig a temporary shelter in the middle of the day.

Rare my foot. I see at least two every full 24s worth of MC.

Putting glass over my giant spider has really ruined how it looks on the 3d Google map. I don't want it to burn down in a random storm though.

I was pondering this issue this morning in bed, as I really don't want to mess up the aesthetics of the Capitol by putting a glass layer on it, but also do not wish for it to burn down.

I was considering the idea of doing a flying glass shield over the area - basically, towering up to the skybox, and inserting a single giant sheet of glass across the sky overhead, blocking lightning, plus rain as a bonus. I may be stymied in this by the fact that it would take 444 stacks of glass to do that for the Capitol, but it should be much more practical for a normal-sized structure, and if it's up high, it shouldn't impair the 3D map significantly either.

I decided to do the flying shield idea. Do keep in mind it will still show up on the map. So I built my floating shield in the exact outline of the spider. On the 3D map it will be offset due to the angle, but will still be more interesting to look at than a floating rectangle. I hope lightning striking next to something can't catch it on fire...

We need lightning rods to be implemented.

I had two wood buildings, one shielded and one not, separated by a one block path. Unless some joker found it funny to dismantle parts of the buildings and leave the roof intact then I think what happened is that lightning struck the unshielded building and spread to the shielded one, burning that down too.

Based on this I'm thinking you may want to shield your building plus anything nearby that's flamable.
