Re: Severe Server Lag in TV5
When I walk around TV5, I feel as though I'm visiting a museum, not a living community. This is not to denigrate museums - there are some incredibly impressive creations on TV5. However, I'm reluctant to actively participate on TV5 as it currently stands. What I liked most about my brief time on the Tekkit server were the sense of discovery and the opportunity to contribute necessities to the building of a new community. On TV5, more things can be built, but nothing needs to be built, and there are continual reminders that I'm always treading well-known ground. There's a world of difference in the two feelings.
I would be in favor of preserving the map in its current state by making it available for download, then holding a destruction party and resetting the map.

Also bears mentioning that nothing is really lost. Every map is backed up and made available for download and local play.ADevilishPotato wrote:I'm not so sure, after all this time, a reset might bring people back in. I know that DD's have really brought out the minecraft community and afterwards people have flocked back to recreate stuff. This server has had quite a bit built, but no more than the first TV10 or TV5 server. I do agree that resetting sucks for anyone who does not wish it, but I don't necessarily think that the option should be taken off the table without a vote. I haven't been on TV5 a lot recently, mostly due to school, but also because it is really developed. The map just doesn't hold the same excitement for me. That being said, if a quick and simple solution does work that makes people happy, then yay.John Doe wrote:I wonder if nightly resets would help tame it some?
If its a matter of the map is too big and unwieldy then I guess it might be time to talk reset or trimming the map if thats possible or even feasible?
TV5 has been running for a year and many many people have put countless hours into it and into their projects, many have come and gone, many new faces and many ongoing works that would be a shame to not see completed. I hate to talk about resets, I hate to lose everyones great works, and I always worry that if we reset many faces may give up on TV5 and not return

Re: Severe Server Lag in TV5
As Coyote says, I think a reset is more likely to bring people in then push people away. We always have a good influx of activity on new maps and new modes. For those of us coming off the hard fall of Tekkit shutting down, a clean slate might be nice; the challenge of starting fresh helps soften the blow of losing so much automation and flexibility. Also, as a museum professional, I agree with his statement that it feels like some kinds of museums - I signed in for a bit the other day and looked around, but while things were very impressive, they also had reached stasis.
For what it's worth, whenever we do eventually reset it (whether that be now, or a long time in the future), I think maybe I'll build The Flavian Amphitheatre, better known to the world as The Colosseum. Gonna suck doing a Roman theme without Marble (hello, wool farming again!), but The Colosseum is brownish, so won't have to worry about that at first. Now, Circus Maximus - that could be fun as well. Pretty bloody huge (around 621m by 150m) though, so I think the Colosseum is a better starting point. It's slightly oblong, curse them - enuogh to make the arches an interesting calculation.
I haven't been around regularly on TV5 for quite a while (since Tekkit popped up), so I don't know if there are some major projects people still have underway there that deserve to get finished first. If so, by all means let's get them finished! We shouldn't use the existance of completed projects as a reason not to move forward though - I finished the US Capitol only one or two days before we reset the server, and I haven't regretted it for a minute.

Re: Severe Server Lag in TV5
I'm in the DON'T reset camp myself. There are plenty of people still actively working on projects.
If someone wants to start on something new there is no reason we need a new map to do so, find an open spot and start building! If you want to set out exploring to find a cool place to build you can do it on the current map.

Re: Severe Server Lag in TV5
The problem isn't just the lack of new land, it's the fact that the map has gotten too big. It's starting to become unstable. People striking out and exploring even further will only exacerbate the problem.Flash wrote:I'm in the DON'T reset camp myself. There are plenty of people still actively working on projects.

I am pretty much in the same camp as Alizee and TTHREAZ. Also what Carpe just said.
IIRC we lost the Tekkit server due to it being too much to handle, and it seemed like Dogs polite way of saying 5 is heading down the same path (albeit it took this long to happen). You do have several updates worth of material loaded on that server.
Either way, thanks for the heads up Dog and do what's best for the server.

Re: Severe Server Lag in TV5
Tekkit server has been recreated.
It is a smaller server taking up less RAM. I might do the same with TV5, reducing the number of players to see if the lag is reduced.

I think the peak on either of these servers has been around 5 when you were discussing performance issues. (sometimes less)Dog wrote:Tekkit server has been recreated.

The last time I talked to someone working on a massive project (besides myself) was Calculon and he said he doesnt mind a reset either. I do not want to speak for him though as he might have changed his mind.
Either way it has become to laggy to play on the last week or so. So there has not been any building progress.
I love the server, I just wanna see it run better. If that means resetting the map, so be it

I am pleased to report that I now have a nuclear reactor.
