I bought a 500 gig WD caviar last feb and installed my OS on it (made a small partition for it). Now when I start up my computer after it has been off for several hours it takes a long time (over 30 seconds for my computer to detect the drive). After about 1/2 an hour of running that problem goes away and on a reboot after that it instantly is recognized, but the drive's OS partition keeps getting corrupted.


Do I need to RMA this sucker, or am I in even bigger trouble and have a bad SATA controller?

Well the drive itself started making a ton of racket just a little bit ago, which is strange, because I transfered everything from it that I wanted to keep to my 300gig PATA drive and then wiped the 500 gig drive.

Unplugged the pc and uninstalled the offending drive. It was so hot I almost burned myself on it.



It's kind of sad, as this is the first WD drive I have ever had that has failed. My old 20 gig drive from the 1990s is still functional...

Damn... Could of overheated if it was too hot too touch. That would be like 50-60C? Defiantly fatal temperatures for a hard drive.

RMA that sucker and make sure you have good airflow in your case for next time.

i would return it or burn it... WD in all reality is not the best drive to get... they may be the biggest company but quality is in fact sacrificed for qauntity here. I would get a Samsung drive if i was you. I have two 160GB Samsung Satas that ive been using for 18 months on one, and 3 years on another, enver any problems. ANd also airflow is very important. In my old computers i would notice my HDD being hot or warm after shutting them down, under not a lot of stress but normal running stress and stuff, not always idle ya know? In my new case, has a Fan right next to the HDDs and my PSUs internal fan right on them, after about 1 hour or so of transfering form one HDD to another non-stop, i pulled out my HDDs and they were room temperature, not hot or warm, if anything cold.

Bah on Samsung....Actually I dont mind em but I prefer Seagates right now just cause they have a 5 year warranty to WDs 3 years....

well i have no problem with Seagate, ive never heard a bad review on Seagate, and in fact when i get my high perfmorance HDDs, I will be tryin to get Seagates bc i know Samsung dont make any. But I will never get another WD HDD. Im waiting patiently for mine to crap out on me. The only reason i has it is because i didnt have to pay for it.

I had a WD crap out and wipe out about 4gb of personal photos that weren't backed up. Lesson learned. lol

I did however buy a WD 10k drive for my new build. Prior to that I had a Maxtor that still runs strong after about 7 yrs. I sure hope this WD holds up, but no biggy, I back my crap up now.

My harddrives don't have any fans on them. They however are pretty much floor-level in my case, which is completely open, so all the hot air should convect away.

ps: the drive was getting hot and making clacking noises when it was empty. It had been formatted hours earlier.

Hrm.. I had similar problems with a SATA Drive that was made for Sata 3.0, while my mobo only supported SATA 1.5

Something to look into, perhaps?

LANPARTY UT NF590 SLI-M2R/G supports sata 3.0, though.


Maybe I just got a bad drive?

talk about freaky..

Bought my first sata yesterday, and loaded it with stuff.. capasity was 750 and it has 500 on it and nothing has hapened..

Segate though

Could be. Still under warranty? get it replaced.

Yeah the click sound usually means there's a hardware problem with the drive. You should probably RMA it.
