Rubber banding

Post by YoullNeverWalkAlone » Mon Sep 22, 2014 9:46 pm

For the past few weeks I have had issues where my game in TF2 is real herky-jerky. I move, then pause, then go, then pause. PMM spec'd me and said I was rubber banding quite a bit. Didn't have this problem before, but now both tv6 and 7 are nearly impossible for me to play (haven't really tried other places yet).

Not sure what has changed to cause this. I did get a new neighbor two doors down (not sure if that is a problem) and my lap top is actually detecting 9 different wireless networks around me(most of them 2.4ghz I would suspect).

I've never had great connections (no one wants me for a speed run, I load so slow in l4d2 that sometimes in vs I end up dead as infected because I'm so late loading a level), but nothing ever like this.

Ran a speed test and got: ping- 15ms, download: 18.23mbps, upload: 8.21mbps.
Put the desktop on a wired connection to help my wife out, but my laptop is having this issue with the wireless. Sadly going corded is unlikely since in my bedroom the wired connection is all the way across the room and the Mrs. YNWA is not going to go for running a cable.

Thoughts?

Stretch a cable across the bedroom for a few nights, turn off Wi-Fi, and see if that fixes the problem.

If it does then you know the wi-fi is the culprit. If you still have the problem you can rule that out and move on to the next possibility.

What if you're on a wired connection?

You'll have to pardon my ignorance, how do I do that?

I will try the wired connection in the other room (good part of a laptop) and see if it helps. I had been playing borderlands2 with jmomo and was having problems where my poor connection would kick him. Tried the wired connection then, not sure if it made a huge difference, but if it helps TF2 it would be very noticeable right now with my gameplay.

looks like my cl_updaterate is set at 67 (says real value is 67 but server limit is 66).

Should I lower it? If so, how far down?

SO I recorded a demo of me tonight on tv7 (I had netgraph 2 going, not sure if it records) Next, can someone help me figure out how to post the demo so that folks can see what my issue might be? Ping'd tv7 and got 0 percent package loss and 19-23ms average on 10 pings.

I started having the same issue a few weeks ago, all this after i had finally optimized my game with chris max framerates and life was golden, a number of tf2 updates later and i am back to where i started. TF2 is unplayable, very jerky, constant audio repeating, it is a mess. I plan to replace my laptop with a desktop asap so I can play again. I have no idea what happened.

I hope you get an answer YNWA!

I've had a ton of trouble lately with TF2. Everything had been working perfectly, my scores were improving, I was getting random crits instead of eating them, I was ahead of Spiff in points ;-), things were lighter, faster, brighter........then a few updates get released and all hell breaks loose. The game was unplayable for me for a couple of weeks. I blew away my configuration and tried using the Chris configs to see if it made any difference, but no dice. No changes to my configuration, quality settings, or desktop was making a difference (I even rebuilt my desktop, going from Win7 to Win8.1).

I finally changed my "mat_queue_mode" to "-1" and that has helped a bit. I was able to ratchet up my quality settings and the game still plays okay. If you're using the Chris configs or have in the past, try tweaking that setting. I'm still getting huge fps drop during large fire-fights (200 fps -> 40 fps). Maybe it's a TF2 version of bullet-time.

Any problems in the recent days, i'm willing to bet the patch that was released on Friday has made the game far more unstable as usual. Pre-scripted animations for example (such as headshot deaths or Payload explosions) are incredibly choppy and slow. I've witnessed numerous times on our servers and on Valve-run servers of the choke suddenly skyrocketing for everyone where voice comms become unusable and it's difficult to change weapons or manually reload.

This is hard to be cool and suave while being informative at the same time. Goddamn my coolness.
In my experience, common sense isn't too common.

I've had similar problems related to all the recent updates. What I've found to work is to reset all my TF2 and video card configs to default, see how it runs and then restore my settings one at a time. If that doesn't work then I shut my wireless down overnight. This usually clears up any kind of TF2 playability problems not related to my own suckage and rage.
