Internet Connection

Post by Jonathin » Wed Sep 10, 2014 8:29 pm

It's been having trouble since I can remember and I'm sick of it.

I paid $75 bucks for a new router, this one is better.
I close out all programs that use internet like Skype and Steam.
I have 1.17TB free out of 1.36TB
I cleaned out my cache and history of browsers.
I've ruin diagnosis each saying nothing is wrong.

And yet tonight I get disconnected from the Minecraft server with no explanation in mind. I lag out and become unreliable playing TF2.

No I can't connect my PC to the router directly. It's on the second story and I can't bring it downstairs for that.
VIEW CONTENT:
And I don't want to hear "Well I was just on M and I didn't have any lag issue!" or "I'm not getting and problems here :D" or anything like raising your hand in a class room and saying to a question "I don't know.".

Your previous thread ended with a suggestion to get a long cable to connect to the router. Did you try that?

I feel your pain, I am on the opposite side of my house from my router. There are many things that can interfere with wireless signals, but the biggest offender for me is the microwave. That thing makes the internet completely useless for me. There's really not much you can do except try to cut down on possible interference. Getting a range extender might help a bit, but then again it might not.

I forgot I made that, but in short no, it wasn't an option. I went to bestbuy and they said it wasn't possible to have a cable my needed length, ie 150 feet to be sure, or there wasn't extensions made for Ethernet cables. I left with a new router on the mind and now it came in, but not improving my connection any more than the old one.

uh well if you set the ends up yourself, I think you can buy the raw Ethernet cable in however long lengths you want, and for dirt cheap since you have to attach the cable to the jack, but im sure there is a youtube on how to do that.

I used power line networking a while ago when my router was in the basement and I was on the top floor. It worked decently enough.

Are there multiple other networks in your area? It sounds like channel interference might be part of the problem.

EDIT: Another option would be getting a 100 ft cable and a 50 ft cable and wiring them together with a female-female adapter.

You can buy 200 ft ethernet cable online fairly cheap. I don't know why the guy at best buy told you a 150+ ft cord wouldn't work. I've heard that Cat 5e ethernet cords start becoming less effective at 200+ feet or so. Wiring together 2 cords is always an option if you don't want to order a longer one.

It could also be your ISP. I know that's where all my issues are from.
But then again it is Windstream that I'm stuck with.

Maybe try and get a range extender or a better wireless adapter for your computer. If the signal has to go through a bunch of walls it can greatly effect the signal quality or strength.

150 ft cord, $8.28

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B1G ... 6ZWVBAV3ZA

I run a 50 ft cord to my tower so I don't have to deal with the wireless connection.

And it might not be your router connection at all.

Have you tried http://www.speedtest.net/? Is it just a gaming issue? If yes, could be video card related.

I know you don't want to move the PC and router, but is it possible to just move one of them for like 20 minutes to test the difference?
