Smidge of upgrade assistance please.

Post by bluntspoon » Tue Feb 11, 2014 10:10 pm

I have a SSD and sound card I'm planning to install and will be adding a new video card very soon as well. My trusty Radeon 4850 512MB powerhouse is finally starting to chug a bit in TF2. My move to a 27" monitor from 19" has hastened that along I think. I just looked at my Newegg history and I paid a whopping $109 for the 4850 in June of 2010. But I digress....

My question is should I change out both the sound card and video card at the same time I'm reinstalling windows on the SSD? Are there any pluses/minuses to installing the SSD with current hardware and then adding the VC and SC after? Or just go BAM!, and switch them out all together.

whenever I do major upgrades I always do a fresh install of windows, but that's just me.

I'm reinstalling regardless. Just should I do the SSD first and then add the cards after or swap out everything at once...

I recently upgraded to a new ssd, hd, vid card, and psu and everything worked fine except the video card. My BIOS were so outdated that it wouldn't even recognize it, so I had to install windows and update the bios using an old video card. I then switched back to the video card and everything worked fine. Moral of the story, you'll probably be fine installing everything at once, but installing windows first will help eliminate any risk of compatibility errors.

When I upgrade parts, they all get installed at the same time.

as far as making the process easy, what i like to do is just add new hardware one-thing-at-a-time.
ultimately, assuming all the hardware is ship shape, it shouldnt matter how you go about it. if, however, one piece of hardware has issues with compatibility or is just doa, it sticks out like a sore thumb when you install it piece by piece, whereas if you do it by the "shotgun approach", you might find yourself having to backtrack.
i say its worth it to take your time and do it carefully, why add extra variables to a straightforward process?
