It takes 7 mins to copy 5 gig of data to a usb stick on my computer. It then takes 4 mins to copy that data onto my wifes laptop.
Does this sound correct? I have tried various different usb ports, front and back, 2.0 and 3.0 and no change on my computer.

Re: USB Question
Different USB sticks have different speed memory inside. Some support USB 3 and others only support USB 2. There are a ton of factors that could come into play.
I'm primarily using one of these right now and it flies on my USB 3 enabled laptop but isn't as fast in USB 2 ports of course. http://www.sandisk.com/products/usb/drives/extreme/

Re: USB Question
Writing speed is not the same as reading speed. It will always take longer to write data than to read data, especially to USB devices.

Re: USB Question
As masa said, most standard USB drives read around 15-25MB/s, but only write around 5--10 depending on the drive. The USB 3.0 will be faster with a compatable USB 3.0 flash drive, but it will still copy from the drive faster than writing onto the drive. ALWAAYYYSYSSSSNjecohw

Flash reads much more quickly than it writes.

Re: USB Question
No one has asked this....what type of data? If you're copying 5 GBs worth of archived files, that will take awhile. A single, large file will copy much faster, such as an .iso
Like others have said, USB 3.0 (Or, BluSB as I call it) will go much faster, if you have a compatible storage device.

Re: USB Question
Thanks for the answers on read write speeds, that makes perfect sense. Appreciate it.
