Stuck in menus?

Whenever I go to the class selection or the chat menu and then try to exit out of the menu, sometimes it stays there but I can now move my character around. The problem is, I can't make the menu go away because every key press and click makes the character do the corresponding thing to that key.
Ex: When I try to click cancel in the menu, my character uses his weapon. And when I click escape (or y on the chat menu), it does nothing.
This makes the game unplayable since a menu is blocking the screen and I have to exit the game using the task manager. I got rid of my custom HUD hoping it would fix it, but it didn't. Until I fix this I can't play TF2 anymore. Anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried hitting your hotkey for the class selection menu again? If you do that, will it let you click the cancel button in order to get out?

I have no idea if this will actually help, but maybe you should try to verify the integrity of the game cache.
