Computer Build

Post by arfy4 » Thu Apr 26, 2012 11:27 pm

Well, Though I was looking at laptops a month or two ago, with a lot of though I've realized that buying a new laptop isn't really necessary for me to do yet, and I've ultimately decided to save money and build a desktop, mostly because I've realized that once I have a nice desktop I really won't use my laptop anymore. Anyways, I've found parts for something I think I could build and that could play games decently. I don't know if this will work, so I'm going to ask people here who know more about this than me for recommendations on improvements and what will work here and what won't. Here it is

Processor: Intel Core i7 2600K
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004EB ... PDKIKX0DER

Motherboard: (I don't feel like typing the name for this one)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004PQ ... PDKIKX0DER

Graphics Card: EVGA GTX 560
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 14-130-739

Case/PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811156062

RAM: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004RF ... rt_title_4

Hard Drive: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00461 ... rt_title_1

Yes, I know there's no optical drive and that I probably left something else out. I might just stick with getting some cheap DVD burner drive and calling it good considering I never use my optical drive on my laptop anyways, and I will also need to buy windows 7 or 8 if it happens to come out by the time I do this. I just want to know how well/if this would work and what people think of it. I'm thinking I'll be doing this any time between early October-Early January (Yes, I know how much stuff will change, but what I've seen from looking at computer parts is these parts will only come down in price between now and then)

So, thoughts on this? I would be a first time builder so I don't really know that much about this yet

Like. You said yourself... things will change quite a bit by the time october comes along. The money spreadon your parts seems a little off. Unless you plan on doing 3d design and rendering ( not playing games but making games ) then an i7 wont ever be fully utilized nor would 16gb ram.

Go and look at the falcon guide. Or search for the logical increments pc buying guide it is called also. It might give you a good idea.

You can assume $20 for a basic sata dvdrw unless you want to get into a bluray drive. Also from my understanding / experience the power supplies tha come with cases aren't always the greatest.

( please excuse any mistakes as I am typing on my phone while up changing diapers )

Buying a good power supply and a good case are good investments, those 2 parts have the longest lifetime. Your video card will probably have the shortest lifetime. Keep that in mind when you deide what parts to put your money into.
Keep an eye on newegg for their daily deals, and especially take a look during their black Friday sale in November, great time to pick up cheap components.

2600k -> 2500k, use they money saved by stepping down 1 cpu for a better psu, and then pick a case you'd like too.

Well that case did seem nice, but I guess I could get something for the same price and a better PSU. I would like it to be more or less future proof so that something won't come out in a year or two that this won't be able to play. I guess the processor probably would be a bit more than I would need looking at it again

As soon as the new Playstation/Xbox come out there will be a sudden upsurge in hardware requirements, followed by a lull of 5-10 years...

How about this?

RAM: http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance ... 010&sr=8-5

Processor: http://www.amazon.com/Intel-BX80623I525 ... 835&sr=1-1

Would that 500 watt PSU that the case I was looking at really not be enough? I guess I don't know this stuff that well, but it seems like with these parts that would definitely be a good PSU to start with anyways. I kinda do want to save some money for a nice monitor, I had been kinda thinking of getting something I could mount on the wall behind my computer and have HDMI to that. I also partly liked that case because it has slots that can fit a laptop hard drive, and that would be really nice and convenient for transferring data from my current laptop to the computer.

500 watts is nothing...you want to ruin your computer...have a low wattage psu
If a non-ruined computer is more up your strasse then have moar watts!

So would somewhere around 650 be a good PSU?

go to 8, that should last you a few upgrades as well, you dont want to chance either your devices being throttled...or worse...blowing your psu by trying to pull too much power from it and surging your entire system....not...not that i know from experience...

Here's a wattage calculator: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psuc ... orlite.jsp

500W would probably be fine, so long as you're only using one graphics card. My 750W was originally bought for use with 2 8800GTs and those are power hogs. Today's hardware is much more power efficient, especially the Intel chips.
Make sure to buy a good brand of PSU, you can check reviews here: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/Com ... upplies,6/

The lower quality your PSU, the more breathing room you're going to want between it's maximum rated Wattage and what you expect your system to pull.
