My two cents...

I've had several cheap-mid range headphones/mic setups, and they ALWAYS break prematurely. Usually it's the microphone that poops out. Also, they don't sound very good either.

Got a new laptop and realized that the built in mic is just fine in 98% of my playing situations. Just use some good ear buds ($20 Sonys) and I'm good to go. Earbuds sound good, are light weight, portable as heck, isolate outside sounds, are comfortable, and don't make my ears sweat. They are also usefull for other things (Nook, Phone, jogging w/ tunes, etc...) so when I travel they are a good multi-tasker.

Worked so well (as far as I can tell) that I've moved my PS3 Eye Cam over to my desktop and use it's microphone and some Sony earbuds over there. I didn't have a webcam already, and my PS3 doesn't really need a camera. I would think any webcam would work as a pretty good mic.

This way I can use some good sounding, reasonably priced headphones, and still have a mic.

I've been very pleased with my cheap Logitech headset that has a mic. It seems to do very well if I can keep my kids away from it. This one has lasted 2 yrs, so far. The one before it lasted much longer and then was sat upon and run under our office chair. I found that I couldn't stand the headsets with noise canceling technology because I could hear the constant "whistle" or "static", not sure how to describe it, and it made me crazier than hearing the kids. It seemed like the fancier and more expensive the headset, the more I hated it.

Are the options in this thread still valid? My Plantronics headset's wiring is starting to fail, as in I'm losing my right channel when I tilt my head wrong.

This is hard to be cool and suave while being informative at the same time. Goddamn my coolness.

I'm going to resurrect this thread rather than start a new one, hope that's okay!

I'm looking to get a new headset (exclusive for gaming, I have external speakers for nongaming) for Christmas, just wondering if the suggestions in this thread are still valid, or if people have new ones! Thanks in advance for the tips

I like my Turtle Beach X11's but i admit the random whining sound as well as sound cutting out in apps can get irritating if you use them as your primary sound source.

But, to be clear, it has never cut out while gaming, nor has it ever whined (as the sounds are usually too high to hear it if it is). So for gaming i like it, for everything else i'm not a huge fan.

The Mrs. likes her G35's still but then again she has nothing to compare it to.

I use Sennheiser headsets and I haven't had any issues with them that weren't caused by vacuum cleaners eating cables.

My two-year-old Speedlink Medusa NX blew a channel, Speedlink seems to have disappeared from the Internet, and I don't like being deaf in one ear.

So last week I purchased a $40 Creative Labs Tactic 3D Alpha. They're either miniplug or USB and seem to work decently. Some intermittent static from the USB conversion, so I've been plugging them straight into the audio jacks.

Not the sturdiest, but as I said, "okay."

I cannot get used to your voice over the new mic, FCW.

Oh, I know... I have voice_loopback 1 set, and my first reaction with the new headset was ಠ_ಠ.

The Medusa NX was definitely better with microphone quality.

On the plus side, the mic boom on the 3D Alpha is detachable.

If I need really good audio quality I have a field recorder and a video mic that I could plant on my desk, but... I don't need to do that.
