New Puter

Post by BETTEH » Fri Sep 23, 2011 2:18 pm

Well, not for me. One of my brothers called me up asking me for help either picking out a new one or building one for him. Ive built two so far, but in both cases I had help for the actual shopping. With my work I find it fun and rather easy to put things together and see it all work ;)

So here may be the kicker because I have been out of the computer parts world for a bit, his budget is somewhere between 800-900$. He has mouse, keyboard, monitor etc so that will help hopefully. Just need to build a tower. He is one of the die hard FPS gamer so you can see where i'm going with this.

I'm shopping on Newegg and came across a few towers but they were all rocking an ATI 6850 which doesn't seem to be what he's looking for.

Any help is appreciated.

First I'd decide on Intel or AMD chip, since that will pretty much decide almost everything else.
It's also a good idea to keep an eye on the Newegg Shellshocker deal since it can save you some money on individual parts.

CPU: Intel Core i5 2500k $179.99
http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ ... id=0354589
Budget Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V $139.99
http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ ... id=0364996
Quality Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V PRO $200
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131730
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB $52
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231314
PSU: CORSAIR Builder Series CX500 V2 500W $55
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817139027
Video Card: GTX 560 Ti $240
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130651
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black $50
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822136283
Case: What ever you think looks cool
http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory ... uter-Cases

This is a basic build to get you started. The i5 2500k is a really popular chip right now and microcenter is having a awesome sale on it as well. The motherboard I listed I do not know much about but I know one person who has it and likes it. The RAM and PSU are also nothing special but they were highly rated on newegg. I was too lazy to do the math but I believe this gets you in the price range you wanted. This does not include the operating system software. If you or your brother are students you can usually find Windows 7 at great prices.

If you have any questions let me know.

If it were me (and based on current prices):

Motherboard: Asus P8P67
Processor: Intel i5 Sandybridge 2500k
RAM: 8GB (2x4GB) G.Skill Ripjaw X DDR4 1600
Hard Drive: WD1002FAEX Caviar Black 1TB SATA3
Video Card: EVGA Superclocked GTX560 (Fermi) 1GB
Power Supply: Corsair Enthusiast TX750M 750 watt modular
Case: Antec 200 mid-tower
Optical Drive: Lite-On DVD/CD Burner

Total price: $894.92, with free shipping.

There's an additional $65.00 in MIR's on that load-out right now, reducing it to $829.92 if you count such things. Also, it would presently come with a free copy of the Batman: Arkham City game.

If he is not planning on using something like Virtuo to access the on-chip video card for video transcoding, and isn't planning on overclocking there is really no reason to spend the extra money for the 2500K, just get the normal 2500.

I hope he doesn't plan on sleeping with that case in the same room as him.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811352001 has a red power light, but no real lights otherwise.

Also it is quieter than most cases.

That looks like a solid list, but I'd be wary of the small PSU. No overclocking with only 500W for sure. I have alot that gear on my rig FWIW

I used to sleep in the same room as an Antec Nine Hundred, which had a crapton of lights, and I had no problems.

I wouldn't be able to do that.

I think I'm so used to computer lights, they just don't bug me at night. I have two Antec 900s and a veritable xmas tree of blinking lights on my router and modem, but no issues from running them while sleeping. If anything, the computer fans provide white noise and lull me to sleep even faster :-P

I can handle white noise. I can handle constant dim lights. I can't handle bright leds that bore into my retinas through my closed eyes. It's even worse if they flicker or blink. My p180's hdd light did that if I turned toward it at night. I had to block my LoS to it to get a good night's sleep.
