Why The Lag?

Post by Pine » Sun Jul 03, 2011 3:32 pm

Okay so this problem has been all over the place and I know I've made posts before but nothing seems to fully fix the problem.
Whenever I play something I usually end up getting lag at different times and at different levels, some games worse than others.
I'm running with AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800 2.5 GHz
Windows 7 32 bit OS
XFX HD 6850 Graphics Card.

I also ran an internet speed test because we recently upgraded it and got this:

This still didn't help so I'm looking for input. What can I do to completely remove my lag problems?

Check your steam download settings. Mateo and I have both been reset to a diffrent download speed.
So I would check there also.

step 1: open console
step 2: type "rate" and hit enter. This should tell you what your rate is currently set to. It should be set to at least 10000 if you have broadband.
step 3: type "rate 25000"
step 4: hit enter and close your console

try this and report if it improves things

Are there similar commands like this in other games as well, such as BC2?

try pingtest.net as well to see if you have any packetloss.... even 1 packet loss is unacceptable.

The rate command helped a little in tf2, but I still have lag in almost every other game I play.

Sorry I don't know similar commands for non-source or goldsrc games.

What might be the source of the lag? Is it my ISP because I don't lag in the single player games

It could be your ISP, it could be your LAN and router, or something else entirely.

On an unrelated note because I didnt want to have to create a new topic,
My computer is now BSODing. I tried launching in safe mode and i got a BSOD that was different from the error when I was not in safe mode, but I couldn't catch the full error

So are you having this problem with all your games or just Valve games?

The speed test you did is not a bad start but you are going to need to find your ping at each router on the path. If the site you used to test your speed is hosted there where you live then it's gonna show your connection a fantastic.

Open the command prompt and try a tracert and the IP of any of the Ville servers. Tracert will give you the ping of all the routers along the path to the destination IP. I'm willing to bet you will find that there is a single router along the path that is giving you trouble. Every time I do a tracert I find that the router that leaves my city is the slowest along the path for me. The only thing that will fix it in my case is AT&T to upgrade bandwidth capacity, like that's ever gonna happen in my lifetime.

Still BSODing?

Run memtest if you can boot to a cd for it. If you can't even do that check the PSU.
