So.... I am 99% sure that the answer to this issue is simply "buy a new drive" but this jsut seems really odd to me... I got Brink in store instead of on steam, for a preorder bonus. When I went to install, the drive started clicking... bad sign, immediately thought the drive was toast... Just to check tough, I tried some other disks. Music CD - Worked fine. Fallout: New Vegas - Worked fine. DVD Movie - Worked fine in VLC player, but oddly enough errored in WMP. No clicking though.
Anyone else have issues like this? I'll probably end up having to get a new drive, and find another way to install the game for now.... But it's odd that it only messes up with this game.

Re: DVD Drive
Maybe something is wrong with the disc? If the drive works fine on others. I've seen a lot of reviews on the game being buggy so I wont put it past that the actual disk is burnt wrong.

Re: DVD Drive
Roi and I actually each got a copy.. both click in my drive, but hers works in her computer... I didnt try my copy in her comp yet though... Anyway, its on steam so I was able to just activate my key on steam and download it, but I am not sure if it is actually my drive or the media though... apparently others are having install issues with pysical copies of the game... maybe the media doesnt like certain drives or something?

Re: DVD Drive
Both copies of Brink click in your drive, but Roi's (at least) doesnt click in hers? Double check to see if your copy clicks in her drive.
You've verified that the drive still works for both CDs and DVDs, I'm willing to bet the crashing was a WMP problem. Games dont come on BluRay yet do they? That'd be silly.
Try blowing some compressed air in the drive, the clicking makes it sound like a gear gets stuck. Does it click only while it is spinning up or constantly? When exactly does the clicking start? Is the game dvd slightly larger (width-wise or height-wise) than an average dvd?
Throwing out some crazy ideas, it could be that the dvd is marginally larger than standard and your dvd drive just cant handle it. It could be that the dvd has some sort of raised logo on the dvd and the clicking is the sound you hear as the logo goes by something in the dvd player. If that's the case, it could be unbalancing the dvd slightly, but just enough so that the laser cant read it properly.

Re: DVD Drive
So, it seems to be the same width and diameter as other disks. Both copies work in Roi's comp, and both click in mine... I've tried a bunch of other tings in mine - games, cds, dvds - all work just fine. There doesnt seem to be any raised logos or anything on the disk, but considering that everythign else works, i think I have to assume that there is some sort of flaw in the disk that is minor enough that some drives dont notice, but that mine does... Kind of odd, but if that is the case, than its good... I wont have to buy a new drive, and I really couldnt care less about the disk, since its a steam game anyway, I just put my key steam, and its already downloaded. So, I guess it doesnt matter, but I am curious about it.
