I'll tilt one back in it's memory tonight... and then think about installing the new Caviar Black 1TB I've got on my desk to keep your new 2TB Green company!

tick-a-tick-a-tick-a-tick-a....

I hate that sound. Ever had one make a different noise?

There's a Win98 machine in my house somewhere that still boots up and runs fine. I forget the size of the HD in that, but it's pretty small. I do, however, remember that the drive only had a 1 year warranty on it. Given it's life span, I'm pretty impressed with it. And it's a WD :)

Mine didn't tick, it just started whining like a jet engine loud enough to be annoying through both my p180b noise-reducing case and my koss qz-99 passive noise canceling headphones. the WD diagnostic program couldn't even get a SMART reading off of it.

Shame, it had stuff on it that wasn't backed up. Oh well, it isn't as though I'm going to need my undergrad term papers in the future...

I recently ordered 2 cases of those drives for work, I felt like I should have gotten some sort of pop up telling me I had unlocked an achievement. This is what comes from playing Steam games too often.

Also, sorry to hear about your HD dying, hopefully you were able to get the data off of it.

You're getting there, meta! Valve requires 100TB worth of hard drives to get that achievement.

RAID arrays. But you're right, should have gotten the bigger Drives, because honestly, 2TB is SO last year.

Also, just had to order another 8 of them, so only 2 more to go until I get that achievement!

Had that happen at work years ago with an old Quantum SCSI drive. The thing sounded like a 747 spinning up for take off. From outside the data center you could hear that drive screaming, and that was over the rather loud ambient noise in the room.

With the price of HD these days, and the availability of free online places, there's lot of options for backups.

I think I've still got two of those 120 GB drives in my old Windows box that gets booted up once every other month. Hopefully they have a little life left in them still! :D

The saddest part is that I had to remove my oldest drive, as my PATA add-in controller only works if two cards are plugged in per cable.

Are you sure about that one? Usually that depends on the jumper configuration of the drive. If you swap your drive to either Master, or Cable-Select configuration, and plug it in to the Master plug of the cable, it should still work, I believe. I remember having this issue back in the day, and always being able to fix it with some mix of jumper settings and cabling.

--edit--

Here's a quick snip from wiki:
The mode that a drive must use is often set by a jumper setting on the drive itself, which must be manually set to master or slave. If there is a single device on a cable, it should be configured as master. However, some hard drives have a special setting called single for this configuration (Western Digital, in particular). Also, depending on the hardware and software available, a single drive on a cable can work reliably even though configured as the slave drive (this configuration is most often seen when a CD ROM has a channel to itself).

I'm pretty sure. The drive I wanted to keep was set to master. The controller card wouldn't work unless 2 drives were plugged into the cable.
