Voice volume
Voice volume
So, I got a new headset for christmas and, as some of you already know, i can now not be heard very well in games. It seems okay in some things like TS (though i'm not really sure if thats just becasue theres less other sounds going on in it or something). In l4d2 in particular, people can't really hear me, and I think it happens in other games as well.
Now, I know the first suggestions would be turning it up, but the boost and whatnot is all the way up in multiple places - ingame, in the VIA HD audio deck, and in at least two different places i got to from the control panel. I don't think there is anywhere else I can turn it up.
So, the question is: is there any (free) software out there that is good for boosting it up a bit, and/or is there some other way that i can boost it on my computer that isn't readily apparent? maybe some sort of tweak, or driver update, or something other than simply upping all the levels i could find.
Oh - pertinent info: Plantronics headset (not USB), Win7 64 bit... um, and it's plugged into the front panel.

Re: Voice volume
I ran into a similar problem. Mine wound up being how the boom mic was shaped.
So a little heat here and there, pull and twist. And know it's just fine.
But that was my set not yours.

Re: Voice volume
Really obvious, but throwing it out there just in case, make sure the "mute" switch isn't activated on the headset cord. I've left it on before and couldn't figure out why no one could hear me.

No, he's checked that. And it isn't that he can't be heard at all. He can. It is just really really quiet in spite of having the transmit volume turned up in several different places.

Re: Voice volume
Also something you have prolly tried but have you used the rear audio jacks? My front audio jacks don't work very well at all, not sure if it is my case or what. Also what model of Plantronics?

Re: Voice volume
heh, dongle.... that is a funny word. Um, yeah! so, I haven't tried the rear jacks yet, because my speakers are there, and i am not sure if the headset cord will reach, but i'll give it a shot tonight and see if it helps. My last headset worked okay though.
Edit: I just realized that my last headset was indeed usb though... I didn't like the USB however, because every time i wanted to switch between speakers and headset, i had to go into my sound settings and change which one was default. And if I forgot to do that before starting a game, I would have to actually close the game to switch it. That's why I got one that wasn't USB this time.

Re: Voice volume
I feel your pain with the switching from headset to speakers for sound I do the same thing, forget. Thankfully with Win7 you can just hit the windows key and then type sound in the search bar to bring up the menu quickly. I'll look for the adapter when I go home for lunch
Cheers!

Back when I had a mini-phone headset I got around these issues by using a splitter on the back of the computer. This way sound would go to both the headset and speakers at the same time, all the time. It is then just a matter of turning the speakers on or off and the sound on the headset up or down depending on which you want to use at a given time.
Something like one of these should do the trick:

Re: Voice volume
hm, i do have a splitter or three around here somewhere too.... length would still be an issue, but if it works, maybe I can get an extension or something. I'll have to try that this evening before resorting to USB.
Also, does anyone have any tips for keeping a cord from going all loopy? This headset has a nice thick cord that I was hoping would keep it from doing that, but it seems like every time i pick it up, i have to straighten the cord.

Re: Voice volume
Check your recording volume in Windows 7. It may be either really low, or you could have the mic boost turned off. Make sure the microphone is set as both default recording and default voice comm too.
