utccag.exe?

Post by nacho207 » Thu Jun 25, 2009 1:16 pm

So recently my computer has been pretty slow.

So I decided to figure out what was going on.

I looked through my processes and found this: utccag.exe. Im pretty sure that its not supposed to be there.

Anyway, I looked around in google, and didnt really find anything.

Also, ever since my computer has been slow, Firefox has refused to work. When I try to launch it, it just comes up with a message saying firefox has crashed.

Things I have tried:

Restarting several times
Stopping the process utccag.exe, to no avail
Running Malware Bytes Anti-Malware

Thanks In advance, any help would be appreciated. ;)

Have you run an actual virus scan? AVG, Nod32, or Avast would work well.

What OS do you have? From what I learned this process is from 1st Security Software Center, run by an app called User Time Administrator.

User Time Administrator is an app that will limit the time a person can browse the internet and what apps they use to do so.

Who else uses the computer? parents? spouse?
Go to Start -> Run and type in msconfig
In the new window go to the tab that says Startup. Look through all those little checkboxes for one that says utccag.exe or relates to User Time Administrator. Uncheck that box. Go over to the Services Tag and click the checkbox that says Hide all MS Services. Look through whats left for any sign of the UTCCAG service. If you dont find anything dont worry. Click Apply and then OK, it will tell you that you need to restart for it to take effect, so do that.

Let us know if it helps.

Hmmm....how'd it get there? Parental Controls maybe.....or maybe an annoyed friend who doesn't like how much time he spends online.

Upload your suspicious file there. It will scan it with many different anti-virus programs.

Ok restarted my comp with it not running, and it didnt seem to help.

I'm the only one who uses this comp, and I'm on XP so I dont think it is User Time Control.

I think it may be time for another fresh install of windows...

When in doubt a fresh install always helps
You could always download Win7 RC and see how you like that, since you're reinstalling anyway.

You might want to go through the checkboxes in that MSCONFIG window and see if you can uncheck as many as possible. I typically uncheck most of them, but thats just me. Before you go all out and uncheck them, make sure you know what you're stopping. It wont be anything critical in the Startup area, but the Services area could make you have a bad day.

If you search for utccag.exe on your system, where does it find the file?

Additionally, you may want to submit the executable utccag.exe to ThreatExpert. If it's benign, great, but if not this will give a good diagnostic of what the executable actually does and whether it engages in any malicious activity.
