Yep, been said before fresh install is the best route. They have disk imaging tools out there that can simply image your disk and you can restore later when you get hacked again. Acronis.com offers a good one, I am sure there are many. Stay far away from Windows 8, hands down the worse operating system since vista.

I would disagree with you there.Seventhorn wrote: Stay far away from Windows 8, hands down the worse operating system since vista.
I've been running it and while I do miss the Start button (which can be easily fixed), the speed has made a huge improvement on my Alienware.

My ten second boot with SSD and Win8 would agree with you.Dog wrote:I would disagree with you there.Seventhorn wrote: Stay far away from Windows 8, hands down the worse operating system since vista.

Honestly, if you ignore the new Start Screen, everything else in the OS is just an improved, updated version of Windows 7.
I am the 1%!

The start screen is absolutely terribad. And while you can download a separate addon for the start menu I do think it's a bit unacceptable for MS to have removed it.
That being said...
My new laptop has windows 8 on it, and the boot times are impressive. I practically push the power button and a few seconds later it's booted up. Once I got it set up like a normal computer I didn't hate it. But, I don't know that I will go out of my way to upgrade my main desktop with it.

How fast everyone forgets. Even a fresh win7 install with ssd boots in seconds. It's after a couple years when your registry has grown to 500mb does it slow down as usual. I'm sure win8 is much faster but from experience I'm not convinced it will stay that fast.
I have a hard time predicting the future of windows on desktop right now. I wish there were better options. What seems ideal is to just have an open source desktop that can run all flavors of operating systems in virtual machines at the same time AND still have it behave as though each system owns the hardware (but actually shares with what else is running.)
