I've noticed in game, I can hear some people just fine, but others I either can't or they sound scratchy. Anybody have any ideas why?

It all depends on how much latency you and the other players have.

Also, if it's always constant, it could be their mic. There is a big range of microphone quality, Players that use USB mic's IMO sound alot clearer than ones with analog mics.

I use a Shure 57 with an xlr cable to an M-Audio firewire recording interface and defaults as my audio card.

It's gotta be on of the more wackier setups. Have to use the 'mic boost' since it sounds a bit quiet online, for some reason.
