Nothing irritates me more than sitting down at my computer after getting up to see that all my chat windows, downloads, programs, etc are now gone because Windows oh-so-kindly decided to automatically restart my computer for one of their 100% necessary and important updates they put out approximately every ten minutes or so.
Someone please tell me if there is a way I can disable this "feature"? I will restart if I must to apply updates, but I would much prefer to do it on my own terms.

which windows?
In XP you can set it to download automatically, but not install until you approve it.

Windows 7
Re: Windows Update auto-restart
Depends what version of Windows you're on, I'll assume you're on Win 7.
You can either go the Download updates but let me choose when to install them route via Windows Update settings, or go down the disabling auto-restart via either gpedit if you have Business or higher edition, or registry editing if you're on one of the Home editions.
