Steam and UAC

Post by Mortis462 » Thu Feb 03, 2011 2:14 pm

So all of a sudden Steam on my laptop has gone a little crazy. First laptop info: Alienware m11x i7, Windows 7 HP 64bit.

Ok here's what's going on. Every time I try to launch Steam I get a dialog box saying do not run Steam in Windows Compatibility mode please change your setting and try again. Checked my setting, nothing under compatibility mode checked. When I launch Steam as an Administrator I don't get that dialog box but then I get the Windows UAC box asking if I want to let Valve make changes. This also happens when I try to exit Steam.

What I have done, verify compatibility mode is not in operation, I've uninstalled steam, cleaned registry then reinstalled and it is still doing it.

Any ideas? I'm not finding much on google, but I'm sick and not thinking at 100% any ideas would be appreciated

This popped up as the first result in Google, not sure if you tried this?

Right this happened to me. I have not found a nice solution yet but one thing that worked was to reinstall steam but installing it in a new location (say "c:\steam" rather then program files)
For some reason windows can automatically apply settings and after the event it can be very hard to remove but these settings are based on app install path so changing this should fix the issue.

Please note uninstalling steam removes your installed games so I would copy the steamapps folder then remove and paste it back into the new install location.

Hope this fixes your issue.

UPDATE: Take a look in the registry at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
You may notice steam.exe listed there. Removing that may help. Also check under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE as well in case its admin set.

Edit: Posted extra details/instructions at:

Finally got it fixed. Thanks for the link Gator, I found what I needed off another link from the one you posted. I ended up having to uninstall/reinstall again then tinker in the registry to fix it. Thanks again for the help
