Microphone Doesn't Work in TF2

So wait, when did it start happening? Had you installed anything new during that time?
Have you attempted to reinstall Steam?

It sounds like steam is trying to pick the wrong sound device, I'm assuming you've gone into Steam and done the basic "open steam, click File, go to Settings, and then click the Voice tab, and click the Change Device button". So we'll just skip that.

It's working everywhere else so the problem is simply Steam... When you test the mic, does it recognize any noise coming in at all?

Do you have a link to the type of mic? Its not a USB mic, is it?

Are you running on vista? I run on vista, my mic and speakers only work for a program if i plug them in prior to loading the program in question (has to be a game, steam in the background doesnt count). This is annoying but my computer activates different sound settings for different external audio hardwares, so it also allows me to monitor and vary those settings at will.
