Well you're right Valve hast used Tahoma to display their stuff. But unfortunately they use the font already with the smallest size.

This is the CSS definition:

As we want to have 4 rows we have to choose a font face that looks still nice even in smaller sizes, and for that part are the pixel fonts.

But pixel fonts have also some disadvantages. It quite hard to fined a full featured font face with almost all char sets included. And if there is such a font, then its normally a commercial one. normally the just implement the ASCII part.
