What are these forum "points"

I see on the left side, under your avatar, it lists some kind of "points", which you can donate to other people. What are these and what purpose do they serve? I thought they might have been for posting, but the math didn't work out.

Someone told me to chillax, so I gave them 10 points, and that was kind of fun I guess... but I didn't really know what it did for them.
