Book Recommendations

Post by belak » Mon May 12, 2014 10:45 am

I'm not sure if I missed a previous thread, but I recently found that I have a bit more time for reading...

Anyway, I've picked up a number of old fantasy books I read back in High School, but I'm looking for more... and more recent books.

In the past, I loved Artemis Fowl, Bartimeus, Keys to the Kingdom, Eragon, Another Fine Myth, The Lost Years of Merlin, Faerie Wars, Inkheart, Hitchhikers' Guide, Sherlock Holmes, and The Hobbit.

Lord of the Rings, which I surprisingly enough haven't read yet is on the list, but I'd like a bit more variety.

Anyone have any recommendations?

You read Ender's game? If not do.
Also the Game of Thrones series is pretty good, bit bulkier though.

Ah, I'll add the Ender trilogy to the list... and anything in particular by Brandon Sanderson? Mistborn seems interesting, but it looks like he has a bunch of stuff.

Any of Sanderson's books are great, including his young adult stuff (Steelheart is incredible). Warbreaker or Elantris are great places to start as they are stand-alone books. He also won the Hugo award for best novella for last year's The Emperor's Soul.

If you'd care to give steampunk a try then I'd also recommend The Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences series by Philippa Ballentine and Tee Morris.

I'll also pretty much read anything by Richard Morgan.

I agree, too bad the movie adaptation of The Golden Compass was terrible.

Hmmm there had been a thread previously where someone wanted reading material suggestions... anyways! Here are a few if you haven't read 'em:

Perdido Street Station - China Mieville (and if you like that one check out his other novels set in the Bas-Lag universe)
Good Omens - Neil Gaimen and Terry Pratchett
American Gods - Neil Gaiman
Anansi Boys - Neil Gaiman
Really anything by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett is pretty good, but definitely American Gods. Gaiman's short story collections are also quite good.

I see you've read some Garth Nix with Keys to the Kingdom... have you read his Abhorsen series? First book is Sabriel. They're also very good.

If you haven't read Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and its sequal Long Dark Teatime of the Soul, I recommend those also.

Man, I had another suggestion in mind but forgot it as I was typing this up. Bah. I guesssss that's enough for now >.>

I also recommend the MaddAddam trilogy by Margaret Atwood (first book is Oryx and Crake).

If you enjoy a little humorous fantasy which judging by your list you probably do I highly recommend reading some of Sir Terry Pratchett's disc world series. Try Monstrous Regiment or Guards! Guards! for starters there.

For something a bit more serious and epic fantasy try Patrick Rothfuss's King Killer Chronicles series whiuch starts with The Name of The Wind.

For something more modern fantasy Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series is qiute good. Start with Storm Front.

I hope this helps.
