SteamOS Beta release

Post by Zork Nemesis » Fri Dec 13, 2013 7:08 pm

For those of us that aren't among the 300 lucky recipients of a SteamBox machine, Valve has made the SteamOS itself available in beta. They have instructions and minimum requirements for operation on the site.

http://store.steampowered.com/steamos/
http://store.steampowered.com/steamos/buildyourown

What are the SteamOS Hardware Requirements?
Processor: Intel or AMD 64-bit capable processor
Memory: 4GB or more RAM
Hard Drive: 500GB or larger disk
Video Card: NVIDIA graphics card
(AMD and Intel graphics support coming soon!)
Additional: UEFI boot support
USB port for installation
Make sure that if you choose to install it, your target computer or virtual machine is not in use as the installation will format your drive in the process. It also recommends that you have a 1TB drive or larger, even though the minimum is 500GB.

This is hard to be cool and suave while being informative at the same time. Goddamn my coolness.
In my experience, common sense isn't too common.

Disappointed I can't dual boot this. I wanted to try it out but don't have an extra computer laying around

Use a virtual machine, that's what I plan on doing for the time being though you need a lot of free space on your drive to be able to do that.

I only have about 300gb free, if I really need 500gb I dunno if I'll be able to free up that much space

It's Linux with forced Big Picture. There's really no point to install it if you don't have a Steambox or have an HTPC already.
I am the 1%!

Should be mentioned, if you plan on installing on a Virtual Machine, Oracle VM VirtualBox does NOT support USB booting without assistance. You'll need an additional ISO file to boot off of first. That said, I couldn't get either boot to work so VirtualBox might be a bad choice to begin with.
