Re: Your Gaming Set-up.
Nah - the 3350 comes in better than the 950 in pretty much every application, whether synthetic, practical, utility, or game. It's rated two tiers higher than the 950 by Tom's Hardware, runs slightly faster, and uses only around half as much power. The first generation i7's are monsters in many regards, but even the $1000 enthusiast chips from that generation barely keep up with even the $150 budget chips Intel now makes. The 22nm 1155s just eat the old 45nm 1366s across the board. I don't overclock, so I don't need high TDP or unlocked multipliers on my CPU.Cat Square wrote:Isn't the 950 still a better cpu with tripple channel memory?Alizée Fan wrote:This box is an i7 950 with 24GB RAM and a GTX470. My backup is an E8400 with 8GB and a GTS 450.
I just ordered some upgrades last week and need to go grab them from the office downstairs, but I'll be rotating the i7 950 set-up to backup later today, and installing an i5 3350 later tonight or tomorrow.
AF, how could you relegate such a monster of a CPU to your backup machine? Lusting after USB3.0 or SATA 6Gbps I take it
As far relegating the old chip, it wasn't my original intention, but it actually was the better way to go about it, rather than spending a load of cash to find a full ATX 775 motherboard with enough RAM slots and other connections to keep the E8400 rolling. It's been 2.5 years since my last major overhaul of a system, and that's about normal for me. My backup machine still gets lots of love - it sits right next to my primary, with side-by-side monitors, and I usually operate both at once to faciliate admin'ing or to use as an entertainment system while gaming on my main, and in a pinch to take over if my main goes down. Fear not, the 950 will still be in use.
I don't intend to discard the E8400 yet, but I can throw out the bad mobo and repurpose the rest with a cheap replacement that I don't have to stat up. I already have an HTPC equipped with an AMD Phenom II x4 840 I got as part of a package deal, so I may swap the E8400 to a micro-ATX, or even mini-ITX board, and set it up as a project computer alongside my Raspberry Pi. I don't tend to make "bleeding edge" machines that would break my heart to rotate out (my last one fitting that description was a P4 3.4EE with a GT 6800 back in 2004 or so), so I save a bit of money and get to upgrade more often, which I enjoy doing.

I game on a pre-built Dell XPS. But I do build PCs. Check the msinfo thread for the specs of my sub-$400 build I did last week based on a PC case I found tossed out on the curb.
