Where I've been spending all my time. Building a race car.

Post by MrBlah » Mon Mar 04, 2013 2:11 am

So, I've been busy building a race car for Formula SAE, a collegiate competition.

I finished the frame on Saturday, all except for mounts and tabs for things. Necessary and still plenty of time to go in, but all structural portions are done. I have mounts for the entire rear end of the car done though.

60 hours of design, 300 hours of welding, mock ups, grinding, notching, etc. Some design changes in the middle of building have accounted for about 40 hours additional. No frame jig and it's square to within 1/16". No frame jig means it took a lot longer.

It will be a rolling chassis in two weeks. Front end goes in in 1 week, seat and steering at the same time. I have 3 upper engine mounts to do. The engine should hopefully be running by then, it's out of a 2002 Suzuki GSXR 600 motorcycle. It kind of blew up, and stuff, while we were testing it and tuning it. We dropped 3 valves.

I can't comment particularly knowledgeably, but I love looking at projects in progress like this. Best of luck.

@Alizee, I am leading about 35 people in all. I've got two senior design projects on a new front end and steering as well as on a front and rear wing. There are also about 10 or so people who will show up and help on a regular basis, with another 10-12 who have occasionally shown up to help.

@Potato, When it's done, we will race in Lincoln, Nebraska. Dynamic events will be a 1/4mile drag, skid pad, autocross, and endurance. For some idea of what we are building just Google FSAE.

Is it open to the public?

Essentially. Yes.

We mocked up everything that needs a mount this week, engine back together and runs quite nicely as well. So, it should be on the ground driving in less than 2 weeks.

So, 3 weeks later, it drives. It's stupid fast. Or feels like it. If you wish to understand why I've put so many hours into this car, then go karting. Now imagine 100hp behind you, instead of 10, in a 450lb race car that can pull 2G turns. Being someone who has played all kinds of sports(baseball, basketball, ice hockey, rugby, golf, etc.) Nothing feels like racing. That is all.

I've been lurking in this thread a bit. When you first said an SAE collegiate competition, I pictured a bunch of hipsters building an algae-powered unicycle to race to... IDK Starbucks or something. Then I was like, "Oh, SAE as in SAE".

Frame was assembled with no jig you say?

That's right, no jig at all. I've been thinking of designing one for next year and building that before I leave, so we'll see.
