Justice for Hillsborough

Post by YoullNeverWalkAlone » Fri Sep 21, 2012 4:04 pm

This weekend will mark the first home football match for Liverpool since a recent report was released about the events of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989. A human crush took the lives of 96 people in what is the worst stadium event in Britain's history, and one of the worst in the history of modern sports.

It is hard to describe the feelings and emotions that have pent up for Liverpool fans who have dealt with the uncertainty, lies and loss for the past 23 years. Reports initially blamed drunken supporters for causing the problems and it has taken this long to finally get to the bottom of the story and clear fans of the wrongdoings and place the blame where it truly belonged all this time, squarely on the shoulders of those who allowed the problems with crowd control and a poorly managed event to take place in a stadium that was unfit for hosting the game.

It is a very emotional story of tragedy and pain and even as I try to type this it becomes hard not to well up. A quick search can bring up many horrifying photos of the people who were crushed against the gates and interviews with those who survived the day.

Sunday's match is against Liverpool's fierce rival, Manchester United. Even with as much animosity as this contest usually generates, I look forward to the game and the tributes both teams and their respective fans will present, as rivals for one day can put aside their differences and come together to pay tribute to the 96 who lost their lives and the Justice that is finally served.

For the past 23 years the song and motto first adopted by Liverpool in 1963, "You'll Never Walk Alone" has taken on a new meaning as a way of remembering those who died at Hillsborough. I know some have wondered where I got my long and perhaps odd screen name.

While there are plenty of football/soccer places I could have posted some sort of tribute, I really couldn't think of a better place than here to try to put some of this down as I go through this very emotional weekend. The Ville has been a fantastic, supportive place for many, and for me inparticular over the past year that I've been here. Thanks for taking the time to read this and letting me put some of these thoughts down.

Yes. Although the game didn't go as hoped, the tributes were great.

15 April marks the anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy. ESPN last year, in honor of the 25th anniversary, did an amazing 30 for 30 piece on the event that was stunning. If you get a chance it is well worth the time to watch the documentary.

Justice for the 96. YNWA.

Yeah it's been great knowing that, even late, they got the people in charge of something so terribly mismanaged.
