SERIOUS QUESTION!

Post by Masakari » Sat Mar 05, 2011 5:36 pm

Giz has failed his duties as a SRS QSTN asker, so I'm doing one.

A certain someone I know continually whines and complains about games that only support XBOX360 controllers (Example: Blur). I contend that in reality, XBOX360 probably has the best PC controller out there anyways. So, I'm asking you what you either use/prefer for PC gaming controllers. Vote, and prove me right.

Real men use mice. Controller is for little baby man.

Fighting games, platformers, and racing games would like a word with you Crimson.

There are some games that simply play better with a controller. True story.

Have played with every controller since the Atari 2600 in the 1970s.
They still suck...

Genres which I believe are better with a controller:

Platformer
Racing
Fighting (more specifically an arcade stick)

Genres which I believe are better with a keyboard/mouse:

Shooters
Strategy

Any other genre comes down to personal preference.

And yes, I'm unhappy with how developers have gotten lazy and are only supporting the Xbox360 Controller for PC ports of games.

Microsoft being Microsoft did good work with the 360 controller, being that it is useful for PC and XBOX gaming. Therefore, I have an extra wired 360 controller. If I don't want to look at the crappy 7800 graphics of the 360, I play my racing games on PC, and so on.

There's no doubt that the XB360 controllers are good, but they don't have any more or less funcitonallity than my Logitech controller. I use the Logitech Rumblepad 2 variant (albiet one with a cord) and it does everything I need it to do. Seeing as how I don't own or even want an XB360, there's no reason to get one of it's controllers.

Most games I play controller based are old games, I have lots and lots of emulation and i've tried playing it with the keyboard, it just doesn't work (believe me, Tetris Attack on WASD does not work). The design is easily adaptable to any old controller, especially SNES. And the analog sticks also allow me to play N64 games with no trouble (though a funky button layout as a result)

Where the logitech fails, I also have a Saitek P990 Dual Analog Pad I picked up at the Navy Exchange one day, it sports a similar layout to the 360 controller, but the main reason I have it is because it's button pad is 6 buttons large, solving the mapping issues I had with both the Sega Genesis and N64 emulators.

As for newer games, I usually stick to keyboards but there are a variety of games I'd rather use a controller for. Some notable culprits include Trackmania, the Dreamcast Collection (of course, they're so badly bugged they can't be remapped easily), Altitude, Geometry Wars, Trine, Street Fighter 4, among others I can't think of at the moment. More or less it depends on the genre like a lot of people said. Platformers, Fighters, Racing, and some Puzzle (Tetris Attack, Dr. Mario, puzzle games where you can't just click the object to make it work) are probably the best canidates for controllers

This is hard to be cool and suave while being informative at the same time. Goddamn my coolness.
In my experience, common sense isn't too common.
