I always liked a rapid firing hard hitting semi auto weapon because they are easy to control. Shotguns and magnum revolvers are common examples but both have limited capacity's and slow reload times. Also shotguns are usually incorrectly portrayed as having a massive pattern and severely short range. your average shotgun will put 9-15 00 projectiles in a dinner plate at 30 yards. Half of that diameter with quality ammunition plus a well engineered chamber and barrel. So my only refuge is the semi automatic rifle. In world war 2 games it inst a problem I can pick up a G43 and roll and if that's not available a garand or SVT-40 can do the job. When it come to modern games I'm usually screwed. The only powerful semi autos are generally the sniper rifle which are useless in short range. Even when a 7.62 ar like the FAL or G3 is included it usually isn't as hard hitting as it should be and often fps games lack fire select functions so i cant even go semi auto like i should be able to. That's why I listed the m14 from GRAW2. In that game all of the weapons are beautifully portrayed and the M14 has the scope as optional and the available suppressor. If any game would ever portray the G3 correctly I would love that. After all I like that rifle so much i bought one in real life.

I'm surprised we haven't seen any love for

as of yet.

Now admittedly, I voted for the Q1 SNG myself, but I've never been much of a sniper. For somebody who can aim, the railgun was a total beast!

Trying to think of games way in the past, but I can't really think of anything. So just gonna try and throw out some of my favorites in a gallery view:

Image
Due to the 1 hit kill nature of many classic shooters, this legendary game made spread weapon a favorite allowing the player to concentrate more on dodging bullets but still be able to take out an entire army.

Image
On my first attempt to beat Half-life on the hardest difficulty I got stuck on the final boss not having enough ammo to kill him. On my second attempt I took full advantage of the hornet gun. Not only does it have unlimited ammo but it can shoot around corners. With enough armors and back-peddaling this gun is very powerful. On the final boss I have enough of an arsenal to easily kill it.

*may add more

Wait, people liked Contra? The impossibly hard game?
I mean, I enjoy difficulty in games, but Contra is something else.

As awesome as the spread gun may have been, I don't think Contra quite qualifies as a first person shooter.

Super C was much tougher and to make things worse, they changed the code and reduced it to 10 lives instead of 30.

I played contra to death in high school (late 90s), I got to the point where I could make it from the start to about halfway through snowfield without getting hit.

Sadly, I can't do that anymore.
