Bike advice
Okay, So my parents are buying me a bike, the only limit is it has to cost $300 or less. My preference is it has to have a gear shifter and preferrably with the lever things, the twist ones I don't like. Disc brakes would be nice, though not required. I would like it to hold up for a while. Around 10 years being ridden an average of ten miles a month half of the year. Thats pretty much everything, I'll post other details if I forgot them.

Re: Bike advice
You're missing a lot of information arfy. There are a lot of good bikes you can get for under $300 but what kind of style do you prefer. Obviousely asking for gear shifting you don't want a bmx bike. Now I believe you're pretty young so you may not have a preference but you never know... do you prefer mountain bike or street bike? If you don't have a preference I'd suggest going to your local bike shop (not wal-mart or any major retail) and looking at the 21 speed bikes they have available in your price range. Then even just look at a bike that you sit well on and you like for looks.
Now if you are seriously looking at downhill riding, trail riding, or street riding get back to me on this thread and we'll start looking into options.

Re: Bike advice
my wife and I got some motobecane hybrids last year for under 300 a piece. I forget what the site was that we went through to get them though.

Re: Bike advice
I've been tinkering with buying a roadbike for under $300 as well, so if you can remember that site I'd give you some forum points

My mountain bike was stolen a few years ago and they told me I had to spend $1500 so I bought a Giant Pistol2. I regret it now, as I wish I had bought a road bike...

Re: Bike advice
I would try craigslist. My sister has recently gotten into mountain biking and I have started to enjoy it. She has bought like 4 bikes from there. Since you are growing right now you wont have a bike that last 10 years unless you buy one that is a few sizes to large. And i doubt you can find a new bike with disc breaks for under 300. Also unless you are doing a lot of offroad stuff you dont need disc breaks

I my roadbike. They get spendy fast but I don't regret it. Going 20 mph powered by your own legs feels great.Dog wrote:My mountain bike was stolen a few years ago and they told me I had to spend $1500 so I bought a Giant Pistol2. I regret it now, as I wish I had bought a road bike...

Re: Bike advice
I got my road bike off craigslist for $200. I put about 50 miles a week on it. If you want a decent road bike for under $300, Craigslist is your best bet.

Google. That will give you great advice on more things than you can think of.

Re: Bike advice
I agree with big biker. go to a bike store or a trek store or REI (if anyone else has those, i dont know may be just a wisconsin thing?) but I love that store) I got my mountain bike from REI. the people there are really helpful and i got a pretty good deal on a novara which is like REIs house brand i think. kinda wish i had a road bike because most of my biking is in the city but for the occasional off road or rugged trail having a mountain bike is essential

Re: Bike advice
I'm looking for a new bike. I'll mostly be on the paved biking/walking trail by my house, but the area I live in is very hilly, which is my reasoning for needing a gear shifter, this info should help the advice I get to not be so broad.
Re: Bike advice
i'd say hybrid so long as you aren't doing any major off road.
but first buy a computer. the price of a bike can cover a very good graphics card and a decent processor

The rims of a street bike can easily be destroyed by dirt equestrian trials. Just find a nice light-weight 21 gear mountain bike and you should be fine. I really doubt you need an expensive one, just avoid major retail stores.
