Well I not only think painters are artists but people who think "outside the box" and think pounding on a synthesizer is artistic(thats what my friends do and thats why I don't really like them anymore). I mean if you are a musician, you are not an artist. People act like so much emotion is portrayed in music, but its not, its a means for entertainment. In my band we had songs about smokey the bear being a murderer and we played our songs really fast because it sounds good, not because we were trying to get a point across about smokey being a metaphor for some evil corporation or some crap like that.
that is absurd. do you even know what it is that an artist does??

You cant blame someone else for your own actions. I cant say that MM owes me money cuz I was bangin my head while driving and crashed.

Please dont take this as an attack, I'm just trying to understand this. How can you blame the parents then if you say the actions of the kids are soley thier responsibility. Or are you saying just ppl not directly related to the kids are responsible?
Me personally, would hate to go to sleep at night knowing that some kid committed suicide cause of the music or show I produced influenced him in such a way that it seemed as an escape.
Wanna hear bad, speaking of how you think gaming doesnt or wont influence a kid to an adult.
I know this person that lets her 6 yr old play GTA3 (and knows its wrong but still lets him play it). I would be very suprised if there is anyone that thinks that is even remotely appropriate and doesn't instill hatred, violence, and not to mention abuse to women at a young age. (he is a male child)
I agree with blown 100% on this. He hits it right on the head. Children are influenced by more than just one medium that makes them do what they do.
Parents, friends, culture, religion, beliefs, idols, musicians, video games, and anyothing else can and do influence children. To say it is solidly just one thing is naive.
However, saying that the world would be better place without Marilyn Manson, Grand Theft Auto, Rap music, etc.... is also false
All of these things are beautiful, if taken in with responsibility.
Face it, we are nothing but a product of everything we have been exposed to in our lives. We are not talking about an A = You situation, but more like an A+B+CxD/Y^4 etc.... type of situation.
I still think that parents need to take more responsibility though, because if you look at the shear time as an indicator of how someone will turn out, kids are exposed to their parents far more than any other factor. The only time this changes is around 14-16 when kids get into high school and become more independent.
No matter how much a kid likes marilyn manson or any other influence, they still spend way more time with their parents.

I disagree, art can be anything. You cannot say only paintings are art any more than you can say all sound is music.
Art can be anything you want, anything you see that means something to you. You create a rock shaped like a cheerio, and someone fines it meaningful, its art.
Your song about smokey the bear murdering people, may not mean anything more than face value to you, but your listeners may interpret it differently.
This ties in to the main discussion. Artists can and should not be held responsible for how their art is interpreted. Otherwise, if art has to be interpreted in a certain specific way, it ceases to be art.
Then again, as Freud said, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."

art is anything that appeals to people aesthetically...its something that touches their emotions and captures their senses and imagination.

Just because, by your own admition, your music doesnt mean anything and therefore is completely useless doesn't mean that all music is like yours.
someone call jesus. my head is gonna explode.

Yeah, you make it makes sense, I guess certain people could misinterpret things, and for the rest of you...chill out dude....I got a thing against art because it totally turned my friends into idiots, so i guess I have a bias.
